Middleton's Huepenbecker and Sun Prairie's Houser attract interest

by Marlin Lee, 11/19/2008

-One player who has really made an argument to be ranked amongst the state's top 10 specialists when the next edition of the WisFootball.net player rankings are released is Middleton class of 2009 kicker Tom Huepenbecker (6-1, 165).

Rated as a 4-star kicker by Kohl's Kicking, Huepenbecker was recently named first-team all-conference and the Big Eight Conference Kicker of the Year after making field goals of 21, 26, 28, 28, 28 and 35-yards this season.

That success has been observed and noted as mail has come from Army, Valparaiso, Drake, Northern Arizona, Concordia-St. Paul, Minnesota-Duluth, Southwest Minnesota State, Winona State, Augustana, Gustavus Adolphus, UW-La Crosse, UW-Stevens Point, UW-Whitewater, UW-Oshkosh and UW-Platteville.

In addition, film requests have been made by Army, Valparaiso, Drake, Northern Arizona and Concordia-St. Paul.

Game invitations have come from Army, Minnesota-Duluth, Augustana, Southwest Minnesota State, Winona State, UW-La Crosse, UW-Whitewater, UW-Stevens Point, UW-Oshkosh and Gustavus Adolphus.

Of all the schools mentioned, Southwest Minnesota State, Minnesota-Duluth, Augustana and UW-La Crosse have shown the most interest thus far.

Two of those schools have made their way into Huepenbecker's top five with Army, Drake, Concordia-St. Paul, Augustana and Minnesota-Duluth making up his short list of favorites.

Huepenbecker reported a 5.0-second 40-yard dash, 150-pound bench press and 250-pound squat.

-Staying in the Big Eight Conference, Sun Prairie class of 2010 offensive lineman Trevor Houser (6-4, 275) has received film requests from Northern Illinois, Florida Atlantic, Southwest Minnesota State, Nebraska-Omaha and Missouri S&T.

Houser was named a first-team all-conference selection this season.

Elkhart Lake's Brown is as versatile as they come; Madison East junior QB gets early looks

by Marlin Lee, 11/18/2008

-He may not be a household name or even come from a high school you've heard of but Elkhart Lake-Glenbeulah's Alex Brown (6-1, 175) is the type of overall good athlete and student that colleges love to recruit.

How's this for an athletic resume?

Football: four-year starter; played quarterback, corner back, punter and kicker; first-team all-conference kicker as a senior and honorable-mention all-conference kicker as a junior; rated as a 3.5-star punter and 3-star kicker by Kohl's Kicking

Basketball: two-time second-team all-conference selection; listed on WisHoops.net's Other Top Seniors List

Track: sectional qualifier in the long jump, triple jump and 4x100 meter relay as a sophomore

Baseball: two-time second-team all-conference outfielder

Not bad.

Now add in the fact that he's a member of the National Honor Society and you have all the makings of a possible scholarship athlete.

Perhaps the two best examples of Brown's skill and versatility came in back-to-back blowout wins versus Fall River and Stockbridge this season.

In a 56-6 win over Fall River, Brown had five carries for 174 yards and four touchdowns with scoring runs of 66, 35, 13 and 45 yards. He also completed 1 of 4 passing attempts for nine yards and completed 8 of 8 extra points that game.

A week later, Brown completed 3 of 6 passing attempts for 36 yards and three touchdowns and rushed for two more scores in a 66-0 victory against Stockbridge. He also made a 43-yard field goal and completed 9 of 9 extra points.

Thanks to those types of performances, Brown has earned recruiting looks from a number of Division II and III colleges in the area including Minnesota-Duluth, Bemidji State, Winona State, Minnesota-Moorhead, Southwest Minnesota State, Minnesota-Crookston, UW-Oshkosh and St. Norbert. In addition, Harvard has also expressed interest.

“I like (Minnesota) Duluth,” Brown said of his list of suitors. He took an unofficial visit there on November 8.

Brown reported a 200-pound bench press and 400-pound squat.

-Madison East class of 2010 quarterback Drew McAdams (5-11, 185) is currently drawing early interest from the University of Alabama.

Part of one of the state's most formidable passing duos with class of 2010 wide receiver Marquis Mason, McAdams was recently named to the Shrine Madison All-City Team and honorable-mention all-conference. McAdams completed 154 of 289 passing attempts for 1,892 yards and 13 touchdowns this season.

That followed a sophomore season in which he completed 118 of 229 passes for 1,218 yards and four touchdowns.

McAdams recorded a 4.9-second 40-yard dash, 5.11-second shuttle, 100-inch broad jump, 27.5-inch vertical jump and bench pressed 155-pounds 11 times at the National Underclassmen Combine in Minneapolis back in May.
