De Pere doing such a better job of being aggressive and trying to get into the lane (playing with a purpose) compared to when I saw them play against Algoma back in December, also, their help defense looks better as well.

Preseason #1 De Pere goes from starting the season 4-4 to one win away from a state championship after a 49-37 win.

End of 1st Qtr

Middleton 17
Milwaukee Rufus King 8

Middleton playing disciplined, fundamental basketball, taking calculated shots, meanwhile King is out of control, undisciplined and seeemingly wanting to run & gun on every possession.

FWIW, Middleton was manhandled by D-4 finalist Oshkosh Lourdes, 67-50, earlier this season, during the Franklin Holiday Tournament.

Milwaukee Rufus King 78
Middleton 73

D-1 state tournament record for most points by both teams combined in one game!

The stat line for both teams & individual point totals are very similar. The difference ..... King made 6 more FT's on only 2 more attmpts and Middleton committed 7 more turnovers.

I would say it was broke .... but they did fix it!

They were down 12 before they pulled it together.

I'm almost tempted to say throw out anything De Pere did before 1/1.

Middleton got a little too comfortable playing at King's tempo and it bit them. When you have numbers going into the basket, you have to take it, but it really speeds up the game.

Also, helped that Eckels was able to stay out of foul trouble in the second half, she's big time.

The freshman point guard for King (Fowler) is the real thing, once she gets some physical maturity (she can't be over 95 pounds right now) and the strength to hold through her shot on those teardrop jumpers she likes, she's going to be special.

The "Huh" statement of the tournament: .... WIAA's Dave Anderson when asked during halftime of the D-1 Championship game, his thoughts on the 5-division format in girls & boys basketball, " Well, from behind the curtain, I can tell you that there's probably a couple teams that wouldn't have made it to the state tournament if there were 4 divisions insted of five ...."

Ya think, Dave ..... jeezis!!!

Ends a great day of basketball for the Northeastern part of the state - a Packerland, a Bay, and a FRCC team all bringing home gold balls. Even better was all games came down to the 4th quarter, great way to end the basketball season.

Heck of a final, great game to watch in person.

I just want to comment on the last play. Had that shot gone in, it would have been the single most impressive play I've ever seen a girl HS player pull off live or on TV. 3.9 left, getting a defensive rebound outleted to you at the opposing free throw line and dribbling to a postion where you can get off a 22 foot runner is something.

If UW's men were in the same postion and dumped off a rebound to Jordan Taylor, they'ed be satisfied if he got a shot off from the exact same spot, this is a 9th grade girl we're talking about, not a college guy who could have something resembling an NBA career.

I'm still half in shock from seeing that play.

Did you just compare the athleticism of Wisconsin HS Girls' basketball to NCAA D1? lol...

The last play was the culmination of a lightning quick guard getting the ball and then not being impeded by the defense until she was 25 feet from the hoop. Watching it live, I couldn't believe DP gave Fowler a free run down the court like that.

I've seen a few lightning quick, tiny scoring machines in girls' basketball in my time...and Fowler may already be the best of them all.

Yeah, I LOL'ed at that one myself but that was the point, which you got, 3.9 from a defensive rebound to a 22 footer off the dribble is a "wow" play at most levels much less HS girls

All De Pere had to do was put someone at midcourt literally as a pylon and it would have backed up her shot 8-10 feet. They dodged a big one there

The Bowe shot peeved me in that manner as well. Five seconds left, and you let the guard dribble almost unimpeded upcourt and then get off an uncontested cross-court pass?
