Going to Girls State for 4 Seasons 2 at the Alliant 2 at the Kohl, The Kohl Center was by far the better venue & the atmosphere was way better. They needed to leave the AEC it wasnt the right place for State, I thought the student section bleachers would cave in. I liked what they had to offer near the Kohl Center such as places to eat & stuff to see. I never had any issue with parking as I got into the State St ramp pretty easy. Overall I think my experience along with my community was great at the Kohl, brought good crowds & our team is 4-0 their. Although my experience was a little different this year making the 570 Mile trip from South Dakota. The overall excitement of the Trip to Madison was great all years we went. Being from the Green Bay Area going to Green Bay for state just doesn't seem as exciting. Yet Green Bay has a lot to offer too but most of us have already experienced Green Bay's Offerings. Their are many things in Madison I have yet to experience. I dont know how Madison area people take the approach going to state nearby that's for someone else to mention. I heard the " Well Green Bay has the Womens Basketball tradition" true but that tradition doesn't exist at the Resch Center. Not having to book a Hotel, Short Distance is really the only good part of the deal in my opinion, it wont be the same not being able to take a stroll down State Street, grab a quick bite at the Nitty Gritty, & then head down to the other side to Grab some Popeyes Chicken. Not sure what will come out of this experiment but I hope after the 2 year experiment it heads back to Madison.
Not sure if you're aware
BNE55, but if the main reason for your wanting the WIAA Girls State Basketball Tournament to remain in Madison is to experience the karma of visiting the Nitty Gritty, taking a stroll down State St & grabbing some chicken at Popeye's, all of those places & venues are open & available 364 days a year, including Badger (all sports) game days, the high school boys basketball, high school wrestling, boys & girls swimming, boys & girls high school hockey and girls softball tournaments.
Also, I can't tell from your post if you understand the main reason driving the move to the Resch Center for the girls basketball state tournament: namely,
the unavailability of the Kohl Center for 2 weekends in March due to scheduling conflicts with Badger men's hockey. You've already admitted the Alliant Center is not an attractive alternative, so,
what better venue than the Resch in Green Bay, seeing as how the Kohl Center is unavailable? Just because you spent most of your life in New London, in close proximity to Green Bay and are bored by the city doesn't mean people from the rest of the state feel the same way. The stadium distict is ever-developing & going forward and may be very attractive & convenient for tournament-goers. Sounds to me like you need to experience life a bit more, expanding your horizons & perspectives and gaining some appreciation of the fact that not everyone else sees things through the narrow scope of your eyes. You would be doing well to develop the ability to step outside your own experiences and acquire the art of being able to
at least consider the perspective of others.
Some other testimonials & opinions from another thread on the same subject, supporting the move to Green Bay:
Mick Jagger wrote: A 10,000 seat state-of-the-art facility with amenities might play better than a 17,000 state-of-the-art facility with amenities in terms of maxing out the capacity and playing to a "full house."
Mick Jagger wrote: Few places in the country can rival the eclectic & sometimes electirc atmosphere which Madison offers in terms of charisma, culture & karma. However, there is an abundance of eateries, saloons, hotels & shopping along Oneida St in Ashwaubenon, just south of the Resch Center & west of Lambeau Field. The Holmgren Way area, just east of the Resch Center, has also morphed into a viable entertainment district, within walking distance of the venue.
Also, looming on the immediate horizon is the develpment of an expanded stadium district by the Packers organization. $28 million has already been doled out for property acquisitions in very close proximity to the stadium for this stated purpose. The plans include even more hotels, bars, restaurants, shoppes & boutiques.

Quit whining about change before you give it a chance.

hooch13 wrote:Well I'm from Shawano which in case some people don't know is between Green Bay and Wausau. My family and I have traveled to the state tournaments the last couple of years and have absolutely loved watching the games in the Kohl Center. Would I love to see the games continue in the Kohl center? Of course. However, if the Kohl center is not available for the dates the WIAA wants to use them, then they have to find a suitable replacement. I don't want to have to go to games in second rate facilities like the Field House and the Alliant Energy Center just so the tournaments can stay in Madison. As a fan, if I can't have the Kohl Center than I would want the next best arena to play in. The WIAA has chosen that venue to be the Resch Center. And guess what? It really is a great venue for basketball games. If people choose not to attend the games because they have moved to Green Bay than that is their choice. I'm not going to hold that against them. However, to think that the attendance will drop because of the move is absurd. The Green Bay-Appleton area is a great basketball hotbed and fans will show up to watch the state tournaments because of the close proximity of the Resch Center. So in my mind I don't see attendance as an issue. Now referring to the walking distance question. If you park at Lambeau Field, you will be able to walk to the Resch Center, Lambeau Field, and to the many restaurants that are nearby. This should not be a city vs. a city argument. This is a Kohl vs. Resch center argument. In my mind, you can't go wrong with either choice

With the parking/hotel deals made...I can see this as an attendance increaser as the total cost of the experience is now less. The WIAA needs to let that not so little detail known to fans around the state
Mick Jagger wrote:For the sake of this discussion, the geographical center of the state has more relevance. I understand the significance of the population mean, but I think geography trumps population density in this case because of the # of D-3, 4 and 5 schools spread across the state, especially in the northern two-thirds of Wisconsin.
Anyway, I've been suggesting for the past 2 years on the WSN forum that the WIAA consider moving at least the Girls state basketball tounament to the Resch Center in in Green Bay. Beautiful venue, seats 10,000 and has successfully played host to the WIAA girls state volleyball tournament for several years. Phyisically, the Resch beats the pants off the Alliant Energy Center & the UW Fieldhouse in Madison, in terms of amenities, # of concession areas, # & size of restrooms and the size of the concourses. Plenty of hotels, restaurants, shopping, and entertainment surrounding the Resch, as it is located across the parking lot from Lambeau Field.
satinwood wrote:To me, it would be more fun to play in front of a packed, smaller arena (Resch Center) with almost 10,000 people, than to play in a larger arena (Kohl Center) in front of 10,000 people but with 7,000 empty seats.
I find it disconcerting
BNE55 that you would admit to "not knowing what will come out of this experiment," but then, without even giving it a chance, turn right around in the same sentence and state your hope that "after the 2-yr experiment, it returns to Madison." I'm quite certain of one thing: I doubt anyone in your lifetime has ever described you as
having an open mind and giving something a fair & reasonable opportunity to prove itself.
