Ellsworth's Brady Schroeder threw 139 pitches and was still humming along in the 9th. Great performance by Schroeder. The defense needs to pick him up next time as Ellsworth had 4 errors last night.

Herald's article on Ellsworth and Prescott games

http://www.piercecountyh.../id/45695/group/Sports/

Good job MBC teams.

Looks like tonight we have OHS at Somerset, Altoona at Ellsworth, Elk Mound at Prescott and tomorrow NR at CF,

georgakas threw 141...they've been throwing 100 pitches almost every game this year and I know they worked their arms out in the offseason and their arms are conditioned enough to throw that much

You're kidding, right? NOBOBY...I mean NOBODY is "conditioned" to throw 140 pitches in a game.....it's an absolute recipe for injury. Maybe not now, maybe not this season, but eventually it will come back to haunt him. The coach should be ashamed of himself.

Any time you throw a baseball there's a chance for an injury...if you take care of your arm with ice and running along with regular throwing

Sure....anytime you do anything there's a chance of injury. 130+pitches is ABUSE and it will come back to bite you...especially for kids who haven't even fully physically developed. As for icing? No medical proof that icing is beneficial at all. Some have gone away from icing all together. There's a reason that MLB pitchers are on pitch-counts. 120 max....and most of them are world-class athletes.

MLB pitchers are expected to last 162 games and 200 plus compared to 50 innings maybe in high school

There is no way you can justify a high school pitcher throwing 140 pitches... absolutely ridiculous. I know multiple all state and all conference pitchers and even they think this is crazy.

Appears that some states have a limit. NY has a 105 limit for HS.

According to your chart on that website, they are throwing a max of 210 pitches per week, the Ellsworth pitchers throw once a week, so they are well under the max...

If a pitcher has thrown 100 pitches in five innings and he has limited his opponents to two hits and one walk, he has worked a stress-free game. In a case like that, 100 pitches will not take a significant toll on a pitcher's arm. However, if the pitcher has thrown 100 pitches in 2 2/3 innings and he has given up eight hits and four runs, that may take a huge toll. In one case, the coach may be justified in leaving his pitcher in the game and in the other case he should take him out. Pitch count is a factor but it is only one of many. I think HOF Coach Block deserves a little more benefit in understanding than all of you 'arm chair pitchers' are giving him credit for.

But to be fair, they are talking 139/141 pitches and you are refering to 100. I did post something on the statewide baseball board to see what others think about this and pitch counts.

Coach Block is a great coach, and his long term record speaks for itself.
That however does not mean that every decision he makes should not be questioned or discussed.

I wondered so looked into it. HE is W 323 ...L 118 0.732% on the site I found and assume that did not include this year. As I said, a very successful coach.

To be fair I was speaking hypothetically, the number I used was arbitrary. What is interesting to me is that you say a coach's decisions are open to discussion and question. But when I brought up fundamentals being taught in practice you were quick to reprimand me...now it is okay and encouraged?

I think the issue here is about safety of players. Would you agree that not teaching the proper fundamentals puts players at a greater risk of injury? It is clear that the issue here is that people are quick to point fingers at others and say, I can't believe that is going on there. When, in fact, they need to pay closer attention to what is going on - on their own practice/playing fields.

Others were commenting on the 140 pitch area. 40% more than your hypothetical number (100). Where did I reprimand you ? That was not my intent at all. If you took it as such, I am sorry. IMO, no fundamentals overrides the USA Baseball Medical And Safety Advisory Committee Guidelines that suggests that for a 17/18 year old boy. 105 pitches per game for 2 games a week. Studies also suggest that the inj usually takes a while to appear. I totally agree, the safety of players is #1. Why do you think NY limits to 105 ? If 139/141 was cool, ( with proper fundamental training) Why would that not be the norm state/nationwide ? Or are you suggesting that a limited number of coaches, coach pitcher fundamentals well ?

Coach Block is one of the best coaches around. Brady Schroeder and James Georgakas are pitchers who have been working all throughout the off season. Not only are they in good enough condition to throw 139/141 pitches, they are able to bounce back and be just as effective. Yes MLB pitchers dont throw that many pitches but it is due to the fact that they are expected to throw through a season lasting 162 games. Coach Block knows exaclty what he is doing, he has been here for many years in this position. There is no doubt in my mind that these two pitchers will be back and ready to go for Tuesday. Plus after pitching these pitchers ice to slow swelling in the arm, and also these pitchers run a good amount to get rid of lactic acid that has built up during pitching. Both Ellsworth Coaches know what they are doing!

Prescott in a nail biter wins 1 - 0 over Fall Creek in 8 innings. Little knocks in Brookshaw after Brookshaw walked and stole second.

Brookshaw came in to pitch the 7th and 8th.

Ellsworth defeats West Salem - good luck to both teams this evening.

Brookshaw walked and then stole second with Lytle getting the game winning RBI. Definitely a nail biter. Both teams had bases loaded opportunities slip away. Very good game. Good luck to Prescott taking on Grantsburg in a few minutes. The Cardinals defeated Grantsburg earlier this season 5-3.
