Does anyone else think that the WIAA is doing a good job of making itself irrelevant with this decision?

Now, Travis, I can agree that we many disagree but I can't be the only one who sees it as I do. Maybe I am the only one who will post what I think here, maybe not. Give it a few days to see if anyone else wants/cares to respond.

I think most people that were going to be playing with their teammates out of season during school were already doing it. I know in high school we did for soccer.

It looked eerily close.

The fact is this was a bad rule to begin with. It's pretty difficult for athletes, particularly playing sports with larger numbers and from cities/towns without multiple high schools, to continue to play their sport without playing with people from their high school team. And it's a rule that shouldn't be kept in tact just because less people might play 3 sports.

Who is going to be the first HS coach to tell his star player it would be good if you played with the other top 8 players from the team as much as you can so you should look into the local league that plays in Sept, Oct and Nov and you should run our team offense and you will be coached by your dad.

Anyone think that won't happen?

And now kids can do it as part of a HS "league team." They will do it and will play more then 22 games together and play and win tournaments together creating their "bragging rights" over other teams including their crosstown, city or community rivals, and even over other community rival teams that would never face each other in a HS regular season game.

I think eventually this will attract and become more important to the players and families than a HS game. JMHO.

I am not for or against 3 sport athletes. That is not my position at all. What I am saying is that with the change in the rule the WIAA becomes less relevant if it is going to essentially allow HS teams to play as teams in other events and tournaments. The WIAA had an exclusive on the HS team, they just gave that away.

But on the other hand, high schools and their coaching staf were becoming irrelevant because AAU programs had the monopoly on the top athletes and their ability to play in the spring, now the top athletes can choose to play with their high school teammates rather than a recruited, all star team...and now college recruiters may have to bring the high school back in the mix when it comes to learning about a player...so in a sense making WIAA and high school more relevant...and btw, many multi-sport athletes run track/play baseball during the week and play basketball tourneys on the weekend...sounds much more positive than some of the alternatives that these kids have presented to them...

What are all these big fancy tournaments that are such a big deal they are going to take over high school basketball? Keep in mind this is during the school year, so they're pretty much limited to whatever regional stuff is going on.

I am not saying that this will change things overnight only that the WIAA has now opened the door for it to happen. Soemone, some school, some team, some league, facility, etc is going to push the door open futher.
