WBAY-TV reported at 5:00 pm that the Pack has signed former Bengals RB Cedric Benson.

Also, LB Desmond Bishop suffered a serious hamstring injury in last night's game at San Diego. Packers reporting Bishop may miss most or all of the season.

jsonline is less definitive on the signing:

The loss of Bishop really hurts, it looked extremely painful. I hope Benson can provide a spark for the running game but who knows, it amazes me we'll get him (and probably cheap).

Being in sales is tough. Just when you think your day of rejections is over you end up going home to your wife for a couple more rounds.

It appears 2nd-year linebacker DJ Smith out of Appalachian St is set to step in and replace Desmond Bishop at ILB. As a rookie last season, Smith recorded 9, 12 and 9 tackles, respectively, in the 3 games in which he started and had an interception.

All is not lost with the injury to Bishop. Tough blow to be sure, however, I feel DJ Smith will step in & do the job. Packers are high on Smith and it certainly looks like his opportunity to prove them right has arrived.

Signing Cedric Benson? Somebody should go check to make sure Ted Thompson is still in charge of the team.

No kidding. I was thinking pretty much along the same lines.

Meh. Benson is a guy who can push others in the preseason, not mad about that one.

Also, EFF preseason football! DJ Smith is gonna have a big year

To clarify: not upset or dissappointed with TT going out & signing C Benson. What I meant to convey (and I believe Mike did too) is that the personnel move to acquire Benson, is out of character for TT.

Nah Ted Thompson has that sizzle to him. I like the signing here, if Benson can get yards on the ground for us it could open the passing game a heck of a lot more for A-Rod.

I like the Benson signing because Starks cannot stay healthy.

The guy is talented, but if he cannot make it through this season without missing games I think you have to cut him and move on. This will be his third season in a row missing games due to injury, after having a history of injury in college.

Also, I don't think the Packers have to go out and get a top RB in the draft. They don't run the ball enough to need one. Average RBs can do more than enough when you have Aaron Rodgers as your QB and a very good group of receivers.
The Brewers will finish 95-67 and win the NL Central.

Mat Gamel will finish with a .280/.340/.440 triple slash. He will also hit 30+ HR and drive in 90+ RBIs (prorated if plays less than 150 games).

RBs aren't the Packers' problem when it comes to the running game...their run blocking is.

Hard to do much when first contact with the defense is usually at or behind the LOS.

Obsessing over a player (Weeks) does not solve anything. All it does is ruin your day.

I thought I saw plenty of average blocking in the first preseason game that Starks did a terrible job with.

Benson was signed because Starks showed once again he is not ready for prime time with his ball handling .

Another fumble in preseason may get him a flight out .
