I dont know why, but hearing that made me very sad. He had ALL the potential in the world, but blew it away.

Do we really have to review this topic for the 1000th time? It has been 10 years its about time to just forget about him.

Here is a nice website remembering the man, Sam Okey. He averaged 31 ppg and 14 rpg in high school. His 2 year stats at UW were impressive as well, he was almost a lock to be in the NBA if he would have stuck it out at UW and played his final two years. Sad, sad story.

No, use him as an example for future players who could possibly travel down the same path...

How often does a McDonald's All-American come from a D4 high school in Wisconsin? He was kind of a big deal.

I had him as ref a few years back in one of my summer basketball games and he was the laziest piece of **** I had ever seen ref a game.

How often does a McDonald's All-American come out of WI regardless of any division?

He basically got into the party scene a little too much in Madison which caused him to get a bad name with some fans. Along with that, he didn't really enjoy the system Dick Bennett ran and a combination of a few other things, including getting suspended for allegged marijuana use, he left the team in the middle of the season and transfered to Iowa.

Enough to say Sam certainly had a shot at the NBA.
If you didn't see him play then you truly missed out on seeing a special type player. The type that probably comes along once in a decade in this state.

Okey was simply a player who thought he was bigger than the team. He was not and Coach B. said that he would have to earn his way back to being a starter.

I sometimes worry about all this MARKETING/HYPE we place on players now days. As early as their Freshman years we have them as D1 at this school or that. Ranked statewide and nationally at a very early age. ( and seemingly getting younger each year ).

Lets hope that they all stay grounded in who and what they are. Kids that play basketball.
My opinion is that Sam did not.

Sam Okey was just plain dumb. You are right he thought he was bigger then life. For example, He just wins Big Ten Freshman of the Year and the following summer gets nailed with a fake ID in Whitewater I believe it was stating he was from another state. Hmmmm, that is screaming moron.

Sam would have been better off to take a scholorship offer to North Carolina then to be a small fish in a big pond, rather than a big fish in a small pond. I grew up watching Sam playing in the old Blackhawk conference. I remember seeing Dean Smith in the stands of high school basketball game. That was pretty surreal.

He was a tremendous talent without any smarts!

You are right about that, but Sam's ego would never let him go someplace where he wouldn't automatically be "the man". In his eyes, why prove yourself at UNC when you can be handed the glory at UW in a state that already worshipped you. (If you don't believe it, ask yourself how else Stan Van Gundy beat Dean Smith and Tom Davis in a head-to-head recruiting battle.)

Sam chose easy glory over a difficult new challenge and it backfired.

So did Sam Okey atleast cash out on some of his talent over seas? Or did he waste all of it?

He had signed a one-year professional contract with the Konya Basketball Club in Konya, Turkey, but hated the experience so much he left the team after six months and returned to the States with a bitter taste in his mouth.

Then with the Iowa Bobcats of the CBA for $800 a month I guess

I also remember working the concession stand at the UW-Platteville summer league and throughout the summer watching Dean Smith, Stan Van Gundy, Roy Williams, and Dr. Tom Davis walk in to watch him.

Hahah, can you find Sam? I'm not sure anybody knows what he's doing. I heard he owned a bar just across the border in Iowa. That's probably not a good fit for him.
