ADAYSHA WILLIAMS always wanted a Division I basketball scholarship.
When she was offered one, it didn’t take too long to accept.
The Logan High School senior-to-be on Thursday accepted a full-ride scholarship offer from Sacred Heart, a successful program in Fairfield, Conn.
The Pioneers (27-6) are the four-time defending Northeast Conference champions and
played in the NCAA tournament last season, losing to Georgia Tech in the first round. But, Williams said, her college decision was about more than basketball.
“They have great academics,” said Williams, who plans to study physical therapy or athletic training. “I’m really big on academics.”
Williams said she has a chance to battle for playing time immediately.
“Freshman year, I’ll have an opportunity to play,” she said. “That’s another big thing for me.”
Williams, who plays with Holmen’s Caitlyn Russell — an Evansville recruit — with the Milwaukee-based Playground Elite AAU program, said Sacred Heart was the only DI offer she received, although Lehigh showed strong interest.
She also had an offer from Division II Concordia-St. Paul.
Williams said she made a pros and cons list after visiting both Sacred Heart and Lehigh last week.
“Sacred Heart had a lot more things in the pros column,” she said.
Now that the decision is over, Williams can focus on the upcoming season which should be a promising one for the Rangers.
“It’s nice not having to deal with the added stress and pressure of making a decision,” she said.
Williams, an All-Tribune second-team pick as a junior, averaged 11 points and 3 assists for Logan, which won the MVC and a WIAA Division 2 regional title.
She’ll have to help replace the graduated Kennedy Johnson, a first-team All-Tribune pick who averaged 11 points and 7 rebounds a game, and deal with the added pressure of being a Division I recruit.
“I think I’m ready to deal with whatever anyone has to throw at me,” Williams said. “I’ve been dealt more difficult circumstances. It will be good to step up to the plate and show people what I can do.”
