Don't know if anyone watching on TV noticed or whether there was any mention of the #22 Royals jersey that was draped over an empty chair on the Assumption bench during the game, but the spirit of Kiley Flugaur Hackl was there inspiring her schoolmates to persevere in the face of adversity.
Kiley was a star on Coach Joe Birkhauser's 1998 WISAA state championship team and went on to be an RN in the Madison area and mother of 5. She died suddenly of a blood clot in her brain and her funeral was the day before Assumption's sectional semi-final. Her husband Scott(Dir. of Development at St.Paul's(the Newman Center at UW-Madison) is left with the formidable task of raising their 5 children(youngest 4 months old). After her coach returned from her funeral the team dedicated the remainder of their season to her memory and the shining model of faith and service she displayed. Her parents, both retired AHS grads will be moving to Sun Prairie to help as best they can.
Was it just a coincidence that when Mary Sigler, the Royal's leading scorer and Marawood co-player of the year fouled out with just over 3 minutes to play with Assumption clinging to a lead that was dwindling by the minute that somehow the plucky Royals caught a second wind and held on to win?.......I think not.
Sigler #22 came out........but Flugaur #22 stayed in. 2miler, I have been following this story since you reported on it. Maybe you already saw this. For those who haven't, it was seen on Channel 9 WAOW Wausau. http://www.waow.com/stor...assumption-players-honor http://www.centralwiscon...tion-kiley-flugaur-bond/

Newman 23-1 only loss to D1 Oshkosh West by 2 Assumption 23-2 both losses to Newman
game 1 at Newman...49-46 game 2 at Assumption...49-45 in double overtime
Newman going for the 3 peat not only over Assumption this year, but for the gold ball 3 peat at state in Madison.
can the Cardinals beat the Royals again? you know what they say, tough to beat a good team 3 times, these 2 teams are so evenly matched, i expect another thrilling close game, Newman 49-47
thoughts?? predictions?? Sauncy, Newman has a premier program and has ruled the past 2 years but I think this will be the game in which Newman finally falls. 4 years ago, Assumption stole the regional final from Newman despite getting beat soundly by Newman just a week before. Then 2 years ago, Newman took a close one in regionals from a talented Assumption team. This will be the game that Assumption returns the favor. Assumption has been playing good ball the past two games and like you I will predict a very close game but with Assumption coming out on top and will represent the Marawood South at state.

Newman Assumption Edgar Marathon Had Stratford and Auburndale played outside of the south Marawood Conference in regionals, I believe both were good enough to win regional championships elsewhere. The Marawood South has to be one of toughest D-4, D-5 conferences this year. Would you agree?

There are reasons for rules. We need them. We also need people to use common sense and principles to guide them. Take a moment to look at the good will and national exposure the above team/s received by using common sense, principles and good sportsmanship.

scauncy, you were right! Well worth the 1.5 hour road trip to see these two teams play. It was like watching a state tournament game. Huge crowd, great intensity, just a shame that both these teams can't make it to Madison. Would be nice to see a competitive championship game for a change in D-5. i agree, great atmosphere, the Assumption student body was awesome, they will meet again in 3 weeks in Antigo, its cant miss! http://www.wisconsinrapi...sumption-2OT?odyssey=nav|head
