Spring and Summer Team Sportsmanship Award Winners Selected
STEVENS POINT, Wis - The Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association, in cooperation with Rural Mutual Insurance Company, has selected the team Sportsmanship Award winners for the 2009 Spring and Summer State Team Championships.
The winners of the prestigious award are Middleton in boys team tennis, Marion in spring baseball, Ashland in girls soccer, Grantsburg in softball and New Holstein in summer baseball.
Middleton finished runner-up at the State Boys Team Tennis Tournament in Division 1. The Cardinals defeated Madison East 4-3 in the quarterfinals and Kenosha Tremper 5-2 in the semifinals before falling to Marquette in the championship match, 6-1. It’s the second time Middleton has won the award in the last three years, also earning the honor in 2007. University School received honorable mention for the award.
Marion won the Division 4 championship at the spring baseball tournament. The Mustangs held on to top McDonell Central 6-5 in the title game, after blanking Barneveld 1-0 in an eight-inning semifinal game. It’s the first sportsmanship trophy presented to Marion in any sport. Barneveld, Elk Mound, Lakeside Lutheran and McDonell Central received honorable mention.
The WIAA/Rural Mutual Insurance Sportsmanship Award was awarded to Ashland in girls soccer. The Oredockers fell to eventual champion Madison Edgewood 3-0 in the semifinals of their first-ever State appearance. It’s the first Sportsmanship Award presented to the school and community in girls soccer and the second overall. Ashland was co-winner of the honor for summer baseball in 2005. Brookfield Central, De Pere, Divine Savior Holy Angels, Grafton, Kenosha Bradford, Kettle Moraine Lutheran, Madison Edgewood, Madison Memorial, St. Mary Central, Waukesha West and Winnebago Lutheran all received honorable mention.
Grantsburg received numerous positive sportsmanship evaluations during its march to the State Division 3 title in softball. The Pirates defeated Laconia 3-0 in the final after advancing from the semifinals with a 7-2 victory over Weyauwega-Fremont. It is their first Sportsmanship Award in any sport. Schools receiving honorable mention were Altoona, Appleton East, Belmont, Chippewa Falls, Greenfield, Lancaster, Kenosha Bradford, Menomonee Falls, Oakfield, Rosholt, Stevens Point, Thorp and Waunakee.
New Holstein was selected the winner of the award for the summer baseball tournament for the third time in summer baseball and for the fourth time overall. The Huskies previously received the award in 2003 and 2007 for summer baseball and in 1999 for girls soccer. They fell to Muskego 12-2 in the quarterfinals at this year’s tournament. Marquette and West Salem received honorable mention.
The WIAA/Rural Mutual Insurance Sportsmanship Award is presented to one school and community in each of the State team tournaments. The award winners are determined by the conduct and sportsmanship displayed by athletes, coaches, cheer and support groups, mascots, bands and spectators. Additional consideration is given for the effort of school administrators and chaperones to insure support for their teams are positive and that the highest ideals of sportsmanship are upheld. Award winners receive a plaque and banner in recognition of the honor. Schools receiving honorable mention are acknowledged with a certificate of recognition.
The selection process includes contributions and evaluations from contest officials, tournament management, police and security personnel, crowd control and ushers, WIAA staff members, area hotels and restaurants.
