Germantown's Zak Showalter has been selected as the top senior Defensive player as part of the WSN Senior Boys Basketball Awards presented by Taco Bell. Showalter was a unanimous selection.

Showalter is a high-energy, aggressive wing guard who defends with a purpose and hits the glass on both ends of the court. He is especially adept at getting into passing lanes for deflections and steals, which he often converts into easy baskets.

Showalter recorded 64 steals this season, averaging nearly 3 per game. He's helped the Warhawks into the state semi-finals, where they will take on defending champion Madison Memorial on Friday. Showalter and Germantown have picked it up on defense in the playoffs, allowing just 39.7 points per game in the postseason.

Despite scholarship offers from more than a dozen Division I programs, Showalter decided instead to stay in-state and follow his dream of playing for the Wisconsin Badgers, accepting a preferred walk-on invitation.

Finalists for the award were Showalter, Larry Fitzgerald of Pius XI, Reggie Kujak of Blair-Taylor, Dan Studer of Germantown, and Derek Williams of Milwaukee Washington.

The voting panel for the WSN Senior Basketball Awards consisted of:  Nicholas Kartos, WSN President and Founder; Travis Wilson, WSN Content Manager; Mark Miller, WSN Boys Basketball Editor; John Casper Jr., Eau Claire Leader-Telegram
