Senior Girls Basketball Awards: Defense Finalists

Wisconsin Sports Network is proud to showcase the WSN High School Basketball Awards.

The pre-season watch list was trimmed down to 15 semi-finalists, and five finalists for the award have now been selected. Winners are announced the week of the state tournament. Finalists are eligible for just one of the five awards. There will be a total of 25 finalists for the five awards, five different players for each award.

WSN Senior Girls Basketball Awards -- Defense Finalists:

Kayla Dawson, De Pere -- Dawson (5-10) is a very physical player that has played an imporatant role for the Redbirds the past two seasons, including helping them to the Division 1 state title last season. The Grand Valley State (MN) recruit averaged 13.9 points, 6.6 rebounds, 2.4 steals and 2 assists per game. 

Emily Gustafson, South Shore -- South Shore is undefeated heading into sectional final contest against Owen-Withee. The well-rounded play of Gustafson (6-2) has been key to the Cardinals success. The Upper Iowa recruit is averaging 18.5 points, 18.2 rebounds (state-leading), 5.7 blocks, 3.6 steals and 2.3 assists per game. 

Caitlynne Naughton, Neillsville -- Neillsville is riding a 53-game winning streak and their defensive play has been key to the impressive run. Naughton (5-10) is a strong defender and key piece in the Warriors defense that allows only 23.2 points per game. She also contributes over 6 points per game.  

Aaliyah Ramirez, Pius XI -- The Lady Popes finished with a share of the Woodland-West title this season and allow only 31 points per game. Ramirez (5-5) is a very quick guard that has a high motor. Along with her strong defensive play she has connected on 37 threes and is averaging 7.6 points per contest. 

Renee Bennett, Muskego -- Bennett (6-3) is a strong force on the defensive end  as she uses her length to block and alter shots. The Ball State recruit has improved greatly on the offensive end in the past year and ended the season averaging over 10 points per game.
