Jester Weah of Madison Memorial has been selected as the 2012-13 recipient of the Pat Richter Award presented by WisSports.net as the Triple Play Triple Threat Male Athlete of the Year.

The Triple Play Triple Threat of the Week is an honor given on WisSports.net to the top senior boys and girls three-sport athletes in the state and is sponsored by the local community telephone companies of Wisconsin. At the end of the school year, those awarded with the weekly honor are eligible for the Pat Richter Award, which will go out to the top boys and girls three-sport athlete of the season.

Hugh V. "Pat" Richter is one of Wisconsin's most storied student-athletes in state history. He was a three-sport athlete at Madison East High School, competing in football, basketball and baseball. He went on to fame at the University of Wisconsin, earning nine varsity letters in three sports and would later become the Athletic Director at Wisconsin.

Past winners of the award include Kyle Cody of McDonell Central (2011-12), Hank Kujak of Blair-Taylor (2010-11) and Donnie Hissa of Northwestern (2009-10).

Jester was always a multi-sport standout, but almost didn't participate in a third sport as a senior, deciding to go out for track & field shortly before the season started. As much success as he had in football and hoops, it was on the track that he ended up experiencing the greatest individual accomplishments.

"I never thought I'd do this well in track and to go to state and win the 100 and 200 was really unexpected," Jester said.

Winning a pair of championships may have been surprising at the start of the year, but he showed himself early on in the season to be one of the top athletes in the state. He ran the fastest 55-meter dash during the indoor season and would end up with the fastest 100-meter performance in the state as well.

Weah first gained notoriety on the hardwood, playing three years on varsity for head coach Steve Collins in helping the Spartans to a 68-13 record in that span with three Big Eight titles, a pair of trips to state, and a Division 1 championship in 2011. He was a First Team All-Conference selection as a senior, averaging 12.2 points per game.

It is football that will allow him to continue his athletic career at the next level however.

His outstanding athletic ability and strength was on full display on the gridiron, where he was a two-time First Team All-Conference selection and a finalist for the Al Toon Award presented by WisSports.net.

Colleges across the Midwest took notice of his talents, but Weah ultimately chose to head East to play football at the University of Pittsburgh.

"I'd have to say football is my favorite sport," Weah adds."I like that it is a team sport and I really like scoring touchdowns. The atmosphere of the fans and the crowd getting into the game is awesome."

The demands of participating in multiple sports can certainly be overwhelming at times, but Weah maintained a 3.2 GPA in high school. Still it was difficult.

"You really don't have enough free time," he said of playing three sports. "It's always either practice or school work. There is hardly any free time. My entire time is basically occupied."

There are certainly rewards however.

"You get to meet a lot of people. People know who you are, especially if you do well. It pushes me to do well in school too because I know if I'm not doing well in school I won't be able to play."
