Nick Mehlum of Superior has been selected as the Week 5 WSN Player of the Week following a statewide vote on WisSports.net. Mehlum was dynamic as a passer and rusher in leading the unbeaten Spartans to a win over Big Rivers rival Rice Lake. He was chosen from a strong group of nominees in Week 5. A total of 8147 votes were cast as Mehlum's 3201 votes edged De Pere's Chris Van Straten, who finished with 2778.

Superior moved to 5-0 on the season with a 27-20 win over Rice Lake on Homecoming, doing so in dramatic fashion as they rallied from a 20-6 third quarter deficit. Mehlum came up big all game, completing 17 of 27 passes for 227 yards and 2 touchdowns while adding 11 carries, 46 yards, and a score on the ground. His 4-yard scoring scamper with 53 seconds left proved the game-winning play.
