Monona Grove completed another fourth quarter comeback to claim a 21-17 win over Greendale to capture the Division 3 state title.

In Level 3, Monona Grove rallied with a pair of fourth quarter touchdowns to top defending champion Catholic Memorial 20-17. Trailing 17-0 at halftime, the Silver Eagles again dug deep and came up with three second half scores for the win.

Things did not look good for Monona Grove early on, as their first two drives advanced inside the 20 yard line but they came away with no points after turning the ball over on downs. Meanwhile, Greendale got on the board with a 6-yard run from quarterback Josh Ringelberg.

Midway through the second quarter, Greendale found themselves backed up at their own three yard line, but Ringelberg lofted a pass over the middle that was hauled in by Nate Miller, who broke a pair of tackles and took it to the house for the longest offensive play in state finals history. A field goal from Frankie Rutkowski made it 17-0 at half.

Monona Grove continued to move the ball, but several times came away with no points after venturing deep in Greendale territory. They finally got on the board at the 3:09 mark of the third quarter when Jackson Riley caught a 46-yard pass from Tyler Blang.

The Silver Eagles pulled within 17-14 on a 34-yard scoring catch by Trey Powers midway through the fourth quarter.

Monona Grove took over at their own 28-yard line with 6:07 left in the game, and marched down the field on a 10-play, 72-yard drive that was capped by a 1-yard touchdown plunge by senior Brock Offerdahl with 53 seconds remaining.

The defense recorded sacks on the final two plays of the game as Greendale tried to get in scoring position, wrapping up a 21-17 win.

It is the third state title for Monona Grove and first since 1984.
