Barneveld caps undefeated season with win over Assumption in D5 title game

Barneveld rallied in the fourth quarter to defeat Assumption 38-34 and win the Division 5 state title and cap a perfect 28-0 season. 

The Golden Eagles first lead didn't come until 1:46 left in the fourth quarter when junior Rachel Slaney hit a jumper to give Barnevled a 31-29 lead. 

Barneveld didn't shoot very well from the free throw line in the final minutes but were able to escape with the win. They finished 14-for-26 for the game. 

In a game that feature great defense from both teams offensively it wasn't pretty, the Golden Eagles finished 30 percent from the floor and the Royals shot 34.4 percent. Neither team made a three-pointer. 

Slaney led the Golden Eagles with 13 points and 8 rebounds. Sophomore Hannah Whitish finished with 11 points, 3 assists, and 2 steals in the victory. 

Assumption senior Mary Sigler finished with a team-high 10 points and 3 steals. Sophomore Olivia Skibba added 9 points and 8 rebounds for the Royals in the loss. 

This is Barneveld's 5th state title and first since 2005. Last seson they finished as the D5 runner up, losing to Assumption in the title game. 

The Golden Eagles will be one of the favorites in Division 5 next season with the return of their top two players in Rachel Slaney and Hannah Whitish.
