The already crowded trophy case at Cuba City High School will need to be rearranged once again as the Cubans became the first girls basketball program to claim 10 gold balls with a 49-28 victory over Algoma in the Division 4 title game.

It didn't appear the game would be a rout early on, as Algoma actually led 9-8 at the end of the first quarter. The Wolves went up by three with 6:37 left in the first half, but it was the last lead they would have. Chloe Pustina nailed a deep three-pointer to tie it up, and the Cubans went ahead 20-16 at halftime.

Algoma struggled shooting the ball all day, finishing just 27.9% from the field, including 2 of 17 from behind the three point line. With an inability to generate offense, they weren't able to mount a significant challenge in the second half, and Cuba City closed out the game from the free throw line, connecting on 10 of 12 freebies in the second half.

Mollie Wedige did considerable damage inside for the Cubans, making 9 of 13 shots for a game-high 18 points to go with 15 rebounds. Sophomore Jessi Marti finished with 15 points as well for head coach Jeff Pustina.

Algoma was led by senior Kennedy Blahnik, who scored 11. It was the third state title game she played in during her four year career.

This year's game went much differently than the semi-final matchup btween these two teams last year, which Algoma won 62-39. Most of the roster for Cuba City was back this season, and the extra year of maturity, experience, and strength paid dividends for the Cubans.

With the win, Cuba City finished 27-1 on the season as Pustina won his eight title as head coach (the first two Cuban championships were under Syd Sincock).
