Kettle Moraine Lutheran edges Neillsville to win D3 state title

Kettle Moraine Lutheran used a 9-1 third quarter to defeat Neillsville 28-25 to capture the Division 3 state title at the Resch Center. 

The game was a defensive battle with neither team shooting very well, in fact they combined to shoot 13 percent in the first half. Neillsville held a 11-9 lead at the break. 

The Chargers then started the third quarter with a 7-0 run to take a 16-11 lead with 4:38 left and led 18-12 after three. A basket by senior Andrea Meinert pushed Kettle Moraine Lutheran's lead to 8 at 20-12 with 6:16 remaining. 

Neillsville answered with a 9-0 run to get them within one point at 22-21 with 48 seconds remaining, but couldn't get any closer. 

Kettle Moraine Lutheran shot 33.3 percent in the second half after making just 1 of 15 attempts in the first half. 

The Warriors struggled shooting the whole game, finishing 15.2 percent from the floor. 

The Chargers were led by Meinert who finished with 13 points, 10 rebounds, 2 assists, 2 steals, and 2 blocks. Junior Mikayla Voigt added 7 points for the Chargers. 

Leading the way for Neillsville was senior and Jenny Lindner who finished with 13 points and 12 rebounds in the loss. The Milwaukee recruit ends her storied high school career with a 104-3 record, a gold ball, and a silver ball. 

This was Kettle Moraine Lutheran's first trip to the WIAA State Tournament. The Chargers finished the season with a 27-1 record.

Note:  Attendance for the Saturday afternoon session that ended with the Division 3 games was 7,886.
