It was an intriguing year for the WSN Cup in 2013-14, as we saw a first time champion, a strong challenge to Arrowhead's dominance in the Large Schools Division, and a return to the top by Madison Edgewood.

Ultimately, Arrowhead held off a strong challenge from Middleton to claim the Large Schools trophy by less than three points, Madison Edgewood re-claimed the Medium Schools trophy, and University School of Milwaukee unseated Aquinas to claim the trophy in the Small Schools Division.

The WSN Cup is in its seventh year, recognizing schools that provide and achieve success in many of the WIAA sponsored sports. The award totals points earned in both boy's and girl's sports. All current WIAA sponsored sports with the exception of summer baseball are included as part of the scoring for the award.

Large School Division

It was a very similar 2013-14 sports year to the 2012-13 campaign for the Arrowhead Warhawks, as they amassed a dominating lead after the fall sports and scratched by in the spring to claim the Large Schools trophy for the seventh time in the seven years of the award.

A strong spring sports run by Middleton nearly toppled the Arrowhead dynasty, but the Cardinals 761.43 points were just a hair short of the 764 by the Warhawks.

Arrowhead scored a whopping 504 points in the fall thanks to titles in football, girls golf, and girls cross country plus a runner-up finish in girls swimming/diving and a state semi-final run in boys soccer. The spring season netted just 70 points, but it was enough to wrap up the trophy once again.

Congratulations to the Warhawks and Athletic Director Kevin Flegner.

In addition to Middleton, the rest of the top five in the Large Schools Division was Kimberly (595 points), Eau Claire Memorial (528.83), and Neenah (491).

Medium School Division

Madison Edgewood was back-to-back Medium School trophies in the 2008-09 and 2009-10 seasons, but Notre Dame had claimed the last three titles, including an overall top finish last year. The two schools battled it out once again, but Edgewood hung on to reclaim the Medium Schools trophy.

An extremely strong fall sports season that saw the Crusaders claim titles in girls golf, girls tennis, and girls cross country plus a runner-up finish in girls volleyball set the stage for an outstanding season. Not only did Edgewood win the Medium School trophy, their total of 779.43 points was the highest of any school regardless of size. It is just the second time a school other than Arrowhead has posted the highest overall score.

Edgewood also got a state title from the boys swimming/diving team during the winter season, and runner-up finishes in boys tennis and boys golf in the spring.

Congratulations to the Crusaders and Athletic Director Chris Zwettler.

The rest of the top five consisted of Notre Dame (727 points), Catholic Memorial (529.93), Whitefish Bay (519), and McFarland (495).

Small School Division

The Small School Division was ruled by Aquinas for the first six years of the award, as the Blugolds claimed the Small School title each season. 2013-14 was a different story however, as Aquinas struggled mightily and finished well outside of the top, opening the door for University School of Milwaukee to claim a narrow victory over Regis.

The Wildcats got a title from the boys soccer team and runner-up finish in girls tennis during the fall season to get things off to a good start. The boys hockey team's trip to the state semi-finals was the only winter sports tournament run of note, but the spring was much stronger. The boys tennis team was a title and USM got strong finishes from boys track, girls soccer, and boys golf as well to rack up 444 total points, narrowly ahead of the 437 from Regis.

Congratulations to the Wildcats and Athletic Director Rick Johns.

In addition to Regis, the rest of the top five consisted of Lourdes Academy (418.33), Racine St. Catherine's (375), and The Prairie School (360).

Congratulations to the winners and a great job by all the teams during an outstanding and exciting 2013-14 sports season.

Look for the WSN Cup to appear in the winning school's trophy cases this fall.
