Air National Guard Week 1 Player of the Week Nominees:

Cahleel Copus, Madison La Follette -- Sun Prairie entered the 2014 season as the two-time defending undefeated champion of the Big Eight Conference. After a second-place finish a year ago, La Follette was expected to challenge for the title, and got a chance right away in Week 1. A First Team All-Conference performer last season, Copus broke loose for an 80-yard touchdown run in the third quarter to stretch his team's lead to 21-7, then added a 16-yard score in the fourth to solidify a 28-21 victory for the Lancers. He finished with 24 carries for 171 yards and those 2 touchdowns.

Aric Elmore, La Crosse Logan -- Elmore was one of the state's most explosive players last season, earning First Team All-Conference recognition as a receiver, rushing for more than 300 yards, and bringing back 5 kicks for touchdowns. Despite nursing an ankle injury, he showed he's ready for more of the same in 2014 as the Rangers held off Eau Claire Memorial 27-21. Lining up mostly at running back, Elmore carried the ball 20 times for 237 yards and all 4 Logan touchdowns. After Eau Claire Memorial pulled to a 14-13 halftime lead, he ripped off a weaving 96-yard scoring run in the third quarter to recapture the lead, then put it away with a 6-yard scoring plunge with just over two minutes left.

Jack Nejedlo, Fond du Lac -- Many people felt Fond du Lac was a sleeper team heading into 2014, but after an impressive 27-7 win at perennial powerhouse Appleton North, you can move them from the sleeper category to contender. After missing most of last year due to injury, Nejedlo showed no signs of rust, completing 10 fo 15 passes for 106 yards and 2 touchdowns, adding 11 carries for 86 yards and 1 score on the ground.

Troy Laufenberg, Waunakee -- Waunakee did not have the kind of season we've come to expect from them in 2013, going just 5-5 and falling in Level 1 of the playoffs. That included an opening week loss to Madison Edgewood. The Warriors made sure they got off to a better start in 2014, and avenged that defeat at the hands of the Crusaders with an impressive 49-21 victory on Thursday. Senior running back Troy Laufenberg came up huge, carrying the ball 28 times for 350 yards and 5 touchdowns. He also was 6 for 6 on extra points and nailed five kickoffs into the end zone.

Zach Simons, Xavier -- It's never easy to replace a starting quarterback, especially one like Matt Ferris, who set numerous state records as a First Team All-State pick last season. Simons did his best to keep the incredible quarterback play going this year, rallying the team from a 33-8 deficit heading in the third quarter by throwing three second-half touchdown passes as the Hawks won 40-33 over Berlin. On the day he completed 20 of 35 passes for 326 yards and 3 touchdowns, adding 109 yards on the ground. He also recorded two interceptions while playing defense for the Hawks.
