Week 1 WisSports.net Coaches Poll

Please note, divisional placement in our poll is based on our Enrollment Projections done earlier this year. Divisional placement in the WIAA playoffs is not determined until after the season and these projections can and will be different than the divisions at the end of the year. We have added an 8-Man Coaches Poll this season.

Division 1

A considerable debate went on last year regarding who the best team in the state was regardless of division:  D1 champ Arrowhead or D2 champ Kimberly. We didn't get to see it settled on the field, but to start the 2014 season, we do get to see it in the WisSports.net Coaches Poll. Based on our current projection, we have Kimberly firmly on the D1/2 bubble, and in D1 as of right now. In the voting, Arrowhead was a heavy favorite for the #1 spot, followed by Kimberly. Germantown, Oak Creek, and Franklin also got plenty of love and round out the top five. Madison La Follette's win over two-time defending Big Eight champ Sun Prairie and Fond du Lac's eye-opening victory at perennial power Appleton North have them in the rankings to start the year at #9 and #10 respectively.

Division 2

With defending champ Kimberly up in the D1 poll, the team they beat in Level 3 last season, Homestead, gets an early nod at the top spot, although Waukesha West, Menasha, Ashwaubenon, and Waunakee all received first place votes as well. The top five in the voting consisted of Homestead, Waukesha West, Ashwaubenon, Greendale, and Menomonie. An overtime loss to Greendale on a failed two-point conversion didn't hurt Cedarburg too bad, as they open at #8. Defending Division 3 champ Monona Grove is projected in D2 this year, but the Silver Eagles fell to Mount Horeb/Barneveld in Week 1 and are out of the rankings for the moment.

Division 3

Monona Grove won the D3 title last year but our projections have them moving up to D2, leaving Wisconsin Lutheran, who scored an impressive victory over Marquette, to take over the top spot in the Week 1 Coaches Poll. It was a close race however, as Catholic Memorial, West De Pere, and Mount Horeb/Barneveld also received first place votes. Those teams are in order from #1 through #4, with Xavier rounding out the top five.

Division 4

Last year's D4 playoff race was wild and crazy, with Winneconne defeating Platteville in a title game no one could have predicted. Those two teams open the poll at #1 and #2 respectively, but if the playoff race is anything like the Week 1 Coaches Poll, it will be hard to predict once again. Five different teams earned at least one #1 vote, with Brodhead/Juda, Somerset, and Little Chute rounding out the top five in the rankings.

Division 5

Stanley-Boyd is the defending champion in Division 5, and the Orioles get a slight edge in the Coaches Poll to start the year, although #2 Lancaster and #3 Amherst got plenty of support as well. Arcadia, coming off a Coulee Conference title in 2013, posted a dominating victory over Independence/Gilmanton in Week 1 and is 4th, followed by Kewaunee.

Division 6

Shiocton was as dominant as we've seen in capturing the Division 6 championship last year, and the Chiefs open the new season in the #1 spot once again. Saint Mary's Springs is close behind at #2, followed by Athens, Edgar, and Darlington, who is ranked highly despite a 35-19 loss to D4 #2 Platteville. Glenwood City, last year's D7 runner-up, is ranked #8, while Lake Country Lutheran is just outside the top ten after competing in D7 the last few years, but with a 2014 enrollment number that will likely place them in D6 this season. Marathon and Coleman are other teams that got solid support but enter the year on the outside looking in.

Division 7

Defending champion Black Hawk opens the year #1 in the Division 7 rankings, followed closely by Catholic Central. Greenwood/Granton is 3rd, with Almond-Bancroft and Ithaca rounding out the top five. After barely making the playoffs with a sub-.500 conference record last year, Bangor opened the year with a solid victory over Melrose-Mindoro and is 6th.

8-Man Football

We're very excited to produce an 8-Man Football Coaches Poll for the first time in 2014, and hope to be able to showcase and highlight the teams throughout the year with the support of the coaches. Last year's unofficial champion Green Bay NEW Lutheran opens the season #1 in the poll, followed by Gibraltar, Bruce, Prairie Farm, and Elkhart Lake-Glenbeulah.
