In the "Kickoff Bowl" on CW57 Sports in Madison, the Mount Horeb/Barneveld football team opened the season with a bang, knocking off defending Division 3 state champion Monona Grove 29-27 in a thrilling Week 1 contest.
Monona Grove held a 14-2 advantage early in the second quarter, but Mount Horeb/Barneveld junior quarterback Max Meylor led the Vikings to a score late in the period.
MG opened the third quarter with a score, but MHB answered back with a pair of touchdowns to take a 23-20 lead heading into the fourth quarter. It didn't last long however, as the Silver Eagles scored on the first play of the fourth for a 27-23 lead. Less than a minute later, senior running back Wyatt Thompson scored from 35 yards out to give Mount Horeb/Barneveld a 29-27 lead they would hang on to until the final whistle.
Meylor finished the game 16 of 27 passing with 159 yards and 2 touchdowns, while Thompson rushed for 104 yards. The Vikings defense picked off Monona Grove first year starting quarterback Steven Martine 3 times, holding him to just 8 completions in 31 attempts.
