Air National Guard Week 5 Player of the Week Nominees:

Peter Chenal, Frederic - The Vikings entered Friday's Lakeland-North contest against Grantsburg looking to take a step toward a league championship, and thanks in large part to Chenal, they did just that. Going against the previously undefeated Pirates of Grantsburg, Chenal rushed for 251 yards and 4 touchdowns on 38 carries, also hauling in one pass reception for 26 yards. Frederic has a half-game lead in the conference, as their 3-0 record is just ahead of 2-0 Cameron. Chenal is now second in the state in rushing this season with 1141 yards.

Bryce Niemi, Owen-Withee - The Blackhawks attempted just one pass in Friday's 38-14 victory over previously undefeated Abbotsford, and did not complete a throw. That meant the impetus was on the running game to get the job done, and did they ever. In addition to 167 yards from Austin Milliren, Niemi carried the ball 33 times for 282 yards and 3 touchdowns, including a pair of third quarter scores that sealed the game. Niemi now has 894 yards on the season, good for 9th in the state through Week 5.

Jarrod Rudi, Colfax - There are many ways to impact a game, and Rudi found a way to make plays in just about every one of them. In a 47-24 win over Glenwood City that spanned both Friday and Saturday thanks to a lightning delay, Rudi completed 7 of 11 passes for 184 yards and a touchdown, ran for 9 yards and a touchdown, intercepted three passes on defense, averaged 43.8 yards on five punts, and made 5 extra points. Reports are he drove the bus, delivered water to players, and retrieved the tee after kickoffs as well (ok, that was an exaggeration). The win moves Colfax to 3-1 overall and 2-1 in the Dunn-St. Croix.

Brandon Thull, Kewaskum - With the proliferation of spread offenses, 20 carries in the NFL is usually considered a lot. Even at the high school level, anything over 30 is a big number. For Kewaskum running back Brandon Thull, he went well beyond that mark on Friday night to help his team secure a 44-43 overtime win against Kiel. He carried the ball a staggering 51 times, racking up 430 yards and 5 touchdowns, including the game-winning touchdown and ensuing two-point conversion in overtime. It is unclear where his 51 carries ranks in Wisconsin history, but it is known that 60 is the current record, set by Eau Claire Memorial's Steve Fingerson back in 1990. His 430 yards is good for 8th place on the single-game list.

Devin Webster, Sun Prairie - The Cardinals needed some big plays in Friday's game against previously undefeated and conference-leading Middleton, and Webster was the one that came through consistently in a 20-17 victory. He recorded 3 sacks, 2 forced fumbles, and blocked a punt, changing the game for Sun Prairie. His first forced fumble led to a field goal, as did his blocked punt in the third quarter. With the Cardinals clinging to a 13-10 lead in the fourth, Webster forced another fumble, which All-State running back Noah Diaz turned into a game-sealing touchdown two plays later.
