WIAA BOYS SOCCER TOURNAMENT AT UIHLEIN THIS WEEKEND

THE TOURNAMENT:  The 33rd Annual Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association Boys Soccer Tournament will take place Thursday-Saturday, Oct. 30-Nov. 1, 2014 at Time Warner Cable Stadium at Uihlein Soccer Park in Milwaukee, Wis. Ticket prices for the tournament are $8. 

TOURNAMENT INFORMATION: The single-elimination tournament features four divisions. Four teams will compete for the State title in each of the divisions. Below are the pairings and time schedule of games.

STATE TOURNAMENTS LIVE ON THE WEB:  The semifinals of all four divisions of the WIAA State Boys Soccer Tournament will be streamed live on the WIAA.TV portal of the NFHS Network on a consumer subscription basis. CHAMPIONSHIP GAMES ON FS WISCONSIN:  Watch the broadcast of the WIAA Boys Soccer Championship games on FS Wisconsin. The Division  4 title game will be aired live at 10 a.m., and the Division 3 championship game will be aired live at noon. The Division 2 title game is scheduled to be telecast live at 3 p.m., and Division 1 game will aired on a delayed basis at 9 p.m. following the Milwaukee Bucks game. Check local cable listings for the channel in your area.

TIMING FORMAT NEW FOR 2014-15:  Games have been expanded to 90 minutes in length this year with two 45-minute halves. The length and format of overtime has also been altered. There will be two 10-minute overtimes with no sudden victory. The game will be determined by a shootout if the game is still tied after the second overtime period.

LAST YEAR:  Muskego was crowned champion in  Division 1 with a 4-2 shootout following a 2-2 tie with Green Bay Preble. In Division 2, Oregon won the title with a 4-3 advantage in a shootout after a scoreless tie with Cedarburg. Ashland defeated Notre Dame 1-0 to win the title in Division 3, and University School won the first Division 4 championship with a 1-0 win over The Prairie School in the title game.

THE DIVISION 1 FIELD:  Marquette qualifies for State for the 14th time, all coming in the last 15 years. The Hilltoppers have won nine of the last 14 championships, winning four consecutive crowns from 2000-03 and adding titles in 2005, 2008 and 2010-12. In addition, they finished runner-up in 2004 and in 2007. They qualify this year by virtue of their 7-2 win over Kenosha Tremper in the sectional final hosted by Tremper.  Eau Claire Memorial returns to the State Tournament for the fifth time in the last seven seasons and for the ninth time overall. The Old Abes best outcome in the tournament came with a runner-up finish in 2002. They blanked Kimberly 5-0 in the D.C. Everest Sectional final to reach the State semifinals. Beloit Memorial and Menomonee Falls qualify for State for the first time in both the schools’ history. The Purple Knights advance via a 3-1 shootout over Kettle Moraine following a 1-1 tie in the sectional final held at Kettle Moraine. The Indians’ berth in the tournament comes after a 1-1 tie with Hamilton and a 4-2 advantage in the shootout in the Germantown Sectional final.

DIVISION 2 FIELD: Defending champion Oregon makes its third consecutive State appearance and its seventh overall. The Panthers also captured the Division 2 crown in 1998. They blanked Elkhorn 4-0 in the final of the Wilmot Union Sectional final to return to the semifinals in quest of a second straight title. Last year’s runner-up Cedarburg qualifies for the 10th time. The Bulldogs  have won three Division 1 championships–in 1989, 1991 and 1996. They also added runner-up finishes in 1992, 1994 and 1995. The Bulldogs downed Green Bay East 3-1 in the final of the West De Pere Sectional to earn another shot at a State title. Brookfield East is making its 17th appearance at State, which is the most of any member school. The Spartans have qualified in four of the last five seasons. They won State titles in 1995 and 1997 and finished runner-up seven times (1982, 1987, 1989, 1993, 1999, 2003 and 2006). They posted a 4-0 shutout over Whitefish Bay in the final of the sectional hosted by the Spartans. Pulaski advances to the State Tournament field for the first time following the Red Raiders’ 2-1 victory over River Falls in the Marshfield Sectional final.

THE DIVISION 3 FIELD:  Delavan-Darien qualifies for State for the seventh time and for the first time since 2005 when the Comets finished runner-up in Division 2. The Comets were also runner-up three other times (1994, 1996 and 1998) to go with the State  title they won in 2000. They ousted Grafton 6-2 in the East Troy Sectional final to advance to the semifinals. Mount Horeb returns to State for the fourth time, all coming in the last five seasons. The Vikings were the Division 2 champions in 2011 and runner-up in 2012. They advance to State this year via a 1-0 shutout over Edgewood in the final hosted by the Vikings. Both Luxemburg-Casco and Rice Lake are first-time qualifiers to the State Tournament. The Spartans earned their berth by edging last year’s Division 2 runner-up Notre Dame 1-0 in the Seymour Sectional final. The Warriors reach the State semifinals for the first time following a 3-2 victory over last year’s champion Ashland in the sectional held at Rice Lake.

THE DIVISION 4 FIELD:  Three of the four qualifying teams from last year return to the field in 2014. Last year’s runner-up The Prairie School returns to the tournament field for the seventh time and for the fourth time in the last five seasons. The Hawks won back-to-back championships on two different occasions. They captured Division 3 titles in 2010-11, which duplicated their success of 2004-05. With their Division 3 runner-up finish in 2003 and in Division 4 last season, the Hawks have advanced to the title game in each of their previous six appearances. They defeated Lakeside Lutheran 5-0 in the sectional final hosted by the Hawks. Sturgeon Bay qualified for the State Tournament in Division 3 in 2010, in Division 2 in 2011 and in Division 4 the last season. In all three of their previous experiences, the Clippers fell in the semifinals. This season, they qualify following a 1-1 tie with Winnebago Lutheran and advancing via a 5-4 shootout in the Central Wisconsin Christian Sectional final. St. Thomas More will experience the State Tournament for the second time after the Cavaliers’ 3-0 shutout over Sheboygan Christian/Lutheran in the Kettle Moraine Lutheran Sectional final. They won the Division 3 championship in 2006. Barron is making its second appearance. They lost in the semifinals last year. The Golden Bears’ return to the final field of four comes virtue of the 2-1 win over Columbus Catholic in the Marshfield Sectional final.
