By Travis Wilson

After months of debate, the WIAA's Ad Hoc Committee on Competitive Equity has chosen to advance a success-based formula to address the issues facing the association going forward.

It is a recommendation that will presented to athletic director's at the WADA Convention November 9th through 11th for feedback and then presented to the WIAA Board of Control to be placed on next spring's Annual Meeting agenda.

The full information on the proposal can be found by clicking here.

The proposal will apply a point system based on state tournament success in only the following seven sports: boys soccer, girls volleyball, boys basketball, girls basketball, softball, girls soccer, and baseball.

The point system is as follows:

  • 4 points for winning a state championship game
  • 3 points for finishing as runner-up
  • 2 points for advancing to state semi-finals
  • 1 point for advancing to state quarterfinals

Teams in the sports identified above that accumulate 7 or more points in a 3 year span will be moved up one division, in that sport only. Once promoted, teams will leave the promoted division if they have less than 7 points in all divisions in the last 3 years. The system would not go in effect until the 2016-17 season at the earliest.

For additional details, please see the full proposal above.
