DSHA, Catholic Memorial, Waterloo, & Newman Catholic capture girls volleyball titles

DIVISION 1

Divine Savior Holy Angels captured the championship with a five-set victory over Muskego in the Division 1 final at the Resch Center in Green Bay Saturday.

DSHA held an advantage throughout most of first set, but Muskego battled back to stun the Dashers late to win the set 28-26. Seemingly unphased by the swing in momentum, the Dashers controlled the second set throughout to even the match at one set apiece with a 25-11 victory. 

Muskego responded by winning the third set with a string of points midway through game and holding off a late Dashers’ rally. With the fourth set tied 19-19, the Dashers outscored the Warriors 6-2 down the stretch to send the match to the fifth set. 

Neither team held more than a two-point lead in the fifth set until the Dashers went on a 5-1 scoring spurt to end the set and clinch the State championship.

Four Dashers record double-digits in kills. Kelley Berk led the way with 18; Annie Ertz had 15; Katie Wisniewski had 12; and Katie Arnold added 10. Maddie Yoss dished out 30 assists and Katie Machi chipped in with 26. The Warriors were led by Brooke Gostomski with a game-high 22 kill and Sandra Mohr with 15 kills. Morgan Kath assisted on 45 of the kills. DSHA compiled a .302 hitting percentage in the match, while the Warriors hit at a .291 clip.

The Dashers win their second State championship in their seventh appearance in the tournament. The first title came in 2001. The Warriors finish runner-up in its seventh State appearance.

DIVISION 2

Catholic Memorial used an efficient hitting attack to win the Division 2 State girls volleyball championship at the Resch Center in Green Bay Saturday afternoon.

The Crusaders (40-11) got out to a quick start and never looked back. They jumped out to a 7-0 lead in the first set and proceeded to sweep Tomahawk in three sets 25-11, 25-20, 25-20. 

Lexi Allen recorded 16 kills and Ivey Whalen added 10 kills to lead an efficient hitting attack for the Crusaders that compiled a .313 hitting percentage in the match. Hayley Levenhagen and Maddy Rondeau combined to lend out 36 assists.

Anna Nyberg was the only Hatchets’ attacker to reach double-digits in kills with 16 in 36 attempts. Becca Doughty was credited with 18 assists. 

It was the fifth championship overall for the Crusaders, also claiming titles in 2006 and from 2009-11. The Hachets (34-4) finish runner-up for the second time in the last four seasons, also taking second in the State in 2011.

DIVISION 3

Waterloo won the Division 3 championship with a 25-23, 25-20, 28-26 sweep of Marathon at the State Girls Volleyball Tournament at the Resch Center Saturday afternoon.

After securing the first set of the match, the Pirates fought back from a 10-point deficit to cut the Red Raiders’ lead to 17-12. Waterloo proceeded to go on a 8-0 run and secure the win in the second set. They came back from a four-point deficit late in the third set to prevent the match from going to a fourth set.

Madeline Mosher knocked down 19 kills, and Hailey Chittenden added 11 kills and four service aces to lead the Pirates on offense. Claire Mosher was credited with 43 assists. Amanda and Emily Kind accounted for most of the Red Raiders’ offense with 12 and 11 kills, respectively. Morgan Rachu and Julia Anderson combined to hand out 34 assists. 

Waterloo (37-4) posted a .269 hitting percentage compared a 266 percentage for Marathon; however, the Pirates had 25 more attack attempts for a decisive advantage. 

Marathon (32-4) finishes runner-up in its second State Tournament appearance. The Red Raiders’ only other appearance came in 2007.

DIVISION 4

Newman Catholic captured its second consecutive Division 4 championship with a four-set victory over Southwestern at the 2014 State Girls Volleyball Tournament at the Resch Center in Green Bay Saturday morning.

The Fighting Cardinals (39-3) took control of the match by winning the first two sets and went on to clinch the title by scores of 25-16, 25-12, 20-25, 25-19.

Mariah Whalen led the Fighting Cardinals with 33 kills with a .424 hitting percentage and four service aces. Caitlin Deaton added 11 kills, and Abbey Fox led the squad in assists with 32.

The Wildcats were led by Michelle Budden with 23 kills, and Madison Kuhl distributed 30 assists. They were held to a .159 hitting percentage in the game on 107 attempts. Newman Catholic recorded a .238 attack percentage in 130 attempts.

In addition to the two championship, the Fighting Cardinals have finished runner-up twice in their seven State Tournament appearances. Southwestern (29-4) finishes runner-up in its second tournament experience.
