UW-Stout’s Widder Earns Baseball Scholar-Athlete Award

University of Wisconsin-Stout’s Adam Widder has been chosen the recipient of the 2015 Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Max Sparger Baseball Scholar-Athlete Award.

A senior from Wauwatosa, Wis. (Milwaukee Lutheran), Widder maintains a 3.63 grade point average and is majoring in vocational rehabilitation-criminal justice/military science and leadership.  He is a three-time member of the WIAC Scholastic Honor Roll.  Widder is a three-year recipient of the ROTC Scholarship and has claimed UW-Stout’s Chancellor Award for Academic Excellence five times.  He recently received UW-Stout’s WMG Humanitarian Award, an award that calls attention to and recognizes the student-athletes who put sports into proper perspective, who encompass teamwork, campus and community in their everyday lives and put others ahead of themselves.

A team captain, Widder received All-WIAC honorable mention recognition in 2012.  He made seven appearances on the mound for the Blue Devils during the 2015 campaign.

Widder attended US Army airborne school and traveled to Alaska on a Cadet Troop Leadership Training trip.  He was awarded number 1 Cadet and is Cadet Battalion Commander.  Widder has volunteered for the Menomonie Winter Parade, Military Appreciation Games and Toys for Tots.  In addition, he has worked for the District Attorney’s office of Dunn County in the Victim/Witness program, as well as the Menomonie Police Department.

UW-Superior’s Kyle Gauger (Spooner, Wis.) and UW-Whitewater’s Trey Cannon (Palatine, Ill.) were also nominated for this year’s scholar-athlete award.

The WIAC Scholar-Athlete Award is named after Max Sparger, who served as commissioner of the Wisconsin State University Conference for 22 years from 1971-93.  He oversaw the transition of the conference from NAIA to full NCAA membership.  Sparger arrived at UW-Stout in 1959 and served the institution in a variety of capacities, including as an assistant football and basketball coach, head wrestling coach and head football coach.  He served as UW-Stout's athletics director from 1969-71.

In order to be nominated for the scholar-athlete award, a student-athlete must have a minimum 3.50 grade point average.  In addition, he must be in his last year of competition, or on schedule to graduate this academic year, and have competed for a minimum of two years.
