Alec Ingold of Bay Port has been selected as the 2014-15 recipient of the Pat Richter Award presented by WisSports.net as the Triple Play Triple Threat Male Athlete of the Year.

The Triple Play Triple Threat of the Week is an honor given on WisSports.net to the top senior boys and girls three-sport athletes in the state and is sponsored by the local community telephone companies of Wisconsin. At the end of the school year, those awarded with the weekly honor are eligible for the Pat Richter Award, which will go out to the top boys and girls three-sport athlete of the season.

Hugh V. "Pat" Richter is one of Wisconsin's most storied student-athletes in state history. He was a three-sport athlete at Madison East High School, competing in football, basketball and baseball. He went on to fame at the University of Wisconsin, earning nine varsity letters in three sports and would later become the Athletic Director at Wisconsin.

Past winners of the award include Matt Ferris of Xavier (2013-14), Jester Weah of Madison Memorial (2012-13), Kyle Cody of McDonell Central (2011-12), Hank Kujak of Blair-Taylor (2010-11) and Donnie Hissa of Northwestern (2009-10).

Among the things we've learned about Ingold over his career at Bay Port are that he's always up for a challenge, and isn't afraid to try new things. Those attributes, and outstanding athletic ability, helped him make several seamless transitions during his high school career.

As a sophomore, he burst onto the football scene with more than 1000 rushing yards and 22 touchdowns as a First Team All-Conference running back for head coach Gary Westerman.

The next year he moved back to his natural position at quarterback, and was just as effective. He posted more than 2200 yards of total offense, accounting for 21 touchdowns.

As a senior, he really blossomed, earning WFCA All-State recognition and State Player of the Year honors from both the Associated Press and Gatorade. Guiding the Pirates to the state semi-finals in Division 1, Ingold threw for more than 1400 yards with 15 touchdowns, posting an impressive 121.0 passer rating. He did even more damage on the ground in the team's spread attack, rushing for 2324 yards and 29 touchdowns.

Despite some lingering minor injuries from football, he didn't miss a beat when wrestling season came around, going a perfect 41-0 as a senior to capture the Division 1 state title at 220 pounds after a runner-up finish as a junior.

Ingold did not play baseball at the varsity level previously, but picked it up quickly this spring, batting .441 as a Second Team All-Conference selection, helping the Pirates to the state tournament.

The theme of adjusting to new situations was prevalent in his college choice as well. He originally gave a verbal commitment to Northern Illinois to play quarterback, but when Paul Chryst took over the Wisconsin program, the Badgers extended a scholarship offer to Ingold as a linebacker. He quickly accepted, and is already on campus at UW.

Not surprisingly, football is his favorite sport.

"It's the sport where you can pour an entire year of work into just nine guaranteed games and a few more if you're lucky," Ingold told WSN's Mark Miller during his initial Triple Threat profile earlier this month. "The pressure to perform every single week really puts football over the top of the other sports I play."

While football may be his favorite sport, his favorite high school memory comes on the mat.

"Being able to finish my wrestling career at a sold out Kohl Center and finishing an undefeated season in front of that big crowd," he said.

Not surprisingly, while he noted the challenges of being a three-sport athlete, Ingold viewed it as just another opportunity.

"Being able to switch gears in-between seasons can be tough, but a new season always helps get over the previous one and creates new energy."

An outstanding student who graduated with a 3.67 GPA, Ingold was also named a WIAA Scholar-Athlete.
