Megan Gustafson of South Shore has been selected as the 2014-15 recipient of the Pat Richter Award presented by WisSports.net as the Triple Play Triple Threat Female Athlete of the Year.

The Triple Play Triple Threat of the Week is an honor given on WisSports.net to the top senior boys and girls three-sport athletes in the state and is sponsored by the local community telephone companies of Wisconsin. At the end of the school year, those awarded with the weekly honor are eligible for the Pat Richter Award, which will go out to the top boys and girls three-sport athlete of the season.

Hugh V. "Pat" Richter is one of Wisconsin's most storied student-athletes in state history. He was a three-sport athlete at Madison East High School, competing in football, basketball and baseball. He went on to fame at the University of Wisconsin, earning nine varsity letters in three sports and would later become the Athletic Director at Wisconsin.

Past winners of the award include Kennedy Blahnik of Algoma (2013-14), Jenna Orr of Rice Lake (2012-13), Kailee Kamps of Belmont (2011-12), Kendall Wienkes of Highland (2010-11), and Andie Varsho of Marshfield (2009-10).

South Shore's Megan Gustafson burst on the scene as a freshman in basketball and her athletic ability and hard-work helped her also excel in volleyball and track & field during her high school career.

Attending a very small high school with an enrollment of just 52 during her senior year didn't slow Megan down in reaching the ultimate goal of reaching state in basketball twice during her career and the individual stats came along with the team achievements.

Gustafson re-wrote the state's record book this season, setting new records for most points in a career, points in a season, and points in a single game. She led the state in both scoring (40.3 ppg) and rebounding (18.9 rpg) for a second straight year.

Her 3,229 points is second most among girls and boys basketball players in state history, only behind Wausaukee's Anthony Pieper who finished with 3,391 points.

Megan helped South Shore to state tournament appearances as a sophomore and senior and was a three-time WBCA All-State pick.

She also reached state in track & field, finishing fourth in the Division 3 shot put as a senior and as a junior she placed seven in the shot put and 11th in the discus as the state track & field meet.

In volleyball, Gustafson was a three-time first team all-Indianhead performer for the Cardinals, while earning second team laurels as a freshman.

Gustafson will continue her basketball career as a scholarship player at the University of Iowa.

"Basketball has been my favorite sport ever since I was little. My favorite part of it is playing with teammates that are like my sisters. Basketball has taught me to work hard at not just this, but at anything I do." She told WSN's Mark Miller during her initial Triple Play Triple Threat interview.

She truly enjoyed every moment of her high school and noted that the best part playing high school sports was playing with her friends and making it to state in more than one sport.

Not surprisingly, Megan's most admired high school teammate was her sister Emily.

"She's my older sister and I played with her she she was a junior and senior. We made it to state for basketball when she was a senior."

Gustafson also excelled in the classroom, finishing as the valedictorian of her class with a 4.168 GPA.
