Air National Guard Level 3 Player of the Week Nominees:

Sam Boone, Melrose-Mindoro - The Mustangs found themselves in a thriller against top-seeded and unbeaten Pecatonica/Argyle Saturday afternoon, and it was Boone's play down the stretch that helped lift them to a 21-17 victory. Trailing 10-6 entering the fourth quarter, Boone scored on a 3-yard run to put Melrose-Mindoro up 14-10. After Pec/Argyle scored late in the game, Boone engineered a drive that culminated in a 25-yard game-winning touchdown pass to Devon Christopherson with just 17 seconds remaining. Boone finished with 253 passing yards and 2 scores through the air, plus the rushing touchdown.

Jacob Erbs, Reedsburg - Used rather sparingly at running back during the regular season, the All-State caliber linebacker's role in the offense has increased significantly during the playoffs. It culminated in a 10 carry, 146-yard, 2 touchdown performance in a 38-12 win over Mount Horeb/Barneveld. That included a 76-yard scoring run on Reedsburg's first play of the game and a 30-yard touchdown scamper later in the first quarter. He was outstanding on defense as well, recording 10 tackles and a sack.

Trevor Heit, Pepin/Alma - The Eagles faced their first true four-quarter challenge of the year in Level 3 in an epic match-up against fellow unbeaten Spring Valley. As he's done all season, Heit was terrific, rushing 22 times for 169 yards and 2 touchdowns. His weaving 38-yard score in the first quarter put Pepin/Alma up early, and while it was close throughout, they would not relinquish the lead. He scored again from 32 yards out with just over two minutes left to help secure the victory.

Chris Hess, Omro - This is uncharted territory for Omro, who has made its deepest postseason run in school history. In a second China Bull game against Winneconne this season, the Foxes pulled away late for a 29-14 victory, scoring the game's last 22 points. All three of the touchdowns in that stretch came from Hess, on scoring runs of 65, 3, and 77 yards. He finished with 19 carries for a state-high 274 yards and 3 touchdowns.

Garret Wegner, Lodi - At most high schools, the hope is that the kicker doesn't screw things up for you by missing easy extra points. At Lodi, kickers have been a true game-changer the last several years, and Wegner is on pace to be an All-State selection. His candidacy was certainly helped with five made field goals in a 15-14 win over Columbus, including the game-winner from 24 yards out as time expired. His five field goals tied a state record set last year Poynette's Anthony Rittmeyer.
