Saint Mary's Springs holds off Darlington for second straight year in the Division 6 title game

The 2015 Division 6 state championship game ended the same as the 2014 contest, with Saint Mary's Springs defeating Darlington for the title.

Like last year, Springs jumped out early, going up 14-0 midway through the second quarter. Also like last year, Darlington rallied, pulling within 14-13 in the third quarter before eventually tying it at 20 later in the period.

It was a costly touchdown however, as Hunter Johnson stayed down on the turf after scoring from 6 yards out. Helped off the field, the 2000-yard All-State running back would not return to the game. The injury theme continued unfortunately, as 1000-yard rusher Trevor Johnson and starting quarterback Jared Meister would end up on the bench with game-ending injuries.

The wind seemed to leave Darlington's sails after Hunter Johnson went down, as Clay Schueffner took it 56 yards for a score a few plays later to go up 26-20. The Redbirds would get just 35 yards of offense the rest of the way, as Finton Floyd scored a 14 yard touchdown run and Schueffner added another 56-yard touchdown jaunt to seal the deal.

Schueffner finished with 233 yards and 2 touchdowns on just 15 carries, as Floyd added 184 yards and 3 scores on 28 carries, as Saint Mary's Springs finished with 430 rushing yards as a team, just shy of the D6 record of 457 set by Stratford back in 2005. Springs did not complete any of its three passing attempts.

It is the second straight state title for Saint Mary's Springs, their fifth in the last seven years, and sixth overall since joining the WIAA in 2000.
