The outcome of the Division 5 state title game was never in doubt, as Amherst posted one of the most thoroughly dominating victories in recent memory, defeating Spencer/Columbus Catholic 42-0.

The Falcons scored on their first six possessions of the game, with WFCA Offensive Player of the Year Garrett Groshek having a hand in each one.

Groshek went 29 yards for a touchdown on Amherst's first possession, ran 78 yards on the next, and added four touchdown passes in a performance for the ages. He finished 11 of 14 throwing the ball for 172 yards and 4 touchdowns, with 161 rushing yards and 2 scores on 12 carries.

Amherst put up a total of 410 yards of offense, more than triple the 124 yards of Spencer/Columbus Catholic. The high-water mark for the Rockets came after an Amherst touchdown gave the Falcons a 21-0 lead. Hunter Luepke returned the ensuing kickoff inside the 5-yard line, but Spencer/Columbus Catholic could not score.

Just before halftime with Amherst leading 28-0, Spencer/Columbus Catholic finally put together a sustained drive, marching to the 11-yard line before Amaziah McCall intercepted a pass as time expired in the first half.

After just two playoff appearances prior to 2011 and no postseason victories, head coach Mark Lusic has led the Falcons to 19 playoff wins, 2 state titles, and a runner-up finish in the past five years.
