Appleton North scored the first points of the Division 1 girls basketball state semi-final against Verona, but things quickly went downhill from there as Verona dominated to a 69-41 victory.

Along the way, Verona set a new state tournament record for any division by shooting 77.1% from the field (27 for 35). In fact, they had more free throw misses (11 for 28) than field goal misses. The Wildcats also established a new Division 1 state tournament record with 21 assists.

The 6-2 trio of Kira Opsal, Grace Mueller, and Alex Luehring was too much inside, as they combined to go 18 for 22 from the floor and score 47 points.

Verona led 33-18 at halftime, but North made a run to pull within 40-32 with 14:07 left in the second half. Verona quickly closed the door, outscoring the Lightning 29-9 the rest of the way.

Junior Sydney Levy and senior Grace Garvey led Appleton North with 9 points apiece.

It was a back and forth affair all game, but Mukwonago maintained control and scored a 49-45 victory over Oak Creek in a WIAA Division 1 girls basketball state semi-final.

Bre Cera was huge all day, scoring a game-high 23 points, with much of her damage at the free throw line. The senior, who missed much of the year with an injury, made 11 of 12 shots from the charity stripe.

Mukwonago got a big boost from freshman Grace Beyer in the second half, as she scored all 12 of her points after the break.

For Oak Creek, three players hit double figures, led by 15 from Nicky Widenski. Madison Hart added 12 while Haley Zylka chipped in 10.

Mukwonago will face off against Verona in the Division 1 state finals on Saturday.

Attendance for the Friday evening Division 1 session was 5,108.
