Assumption took control of the game early in the second half and defeated Barneveld, 62-45, to win the Division 5 state championship, and in the process ended the Golden Eagles 38-game winning streak.

It's fitting that in the rivalry between Assumption and Barneveld the past four years that the teams split their eight games and each won two Division 5 state titles.

Assumption built a 48-31 lead with 10:29 left before Barneveld scored the next 7 points get back within 10 at 48-38 with 7:52 left.

The Golden Eagles wouldn't get closer than that as Assumption dominance in the paint put the game away.

Senior Gena Grundhoffer, a Lehigh recruit, led Assumption with 20 points and set the Division 5 state tournament record for points with 55. She scored 35 in their state semifinal win over Fall River, setting the single-game Division 5 state tournament record.

Senior Olivia Skibba, a St. Thomas recruit, finished with 18 points and 6 rebounds, while fellow senior Macie Zurfluh added 10 points for the Royals.

Barneveld was led by Nebraska recruit Hannah Whitish who was named Miss Basketball by the WBCA earlier today.

Whitish finished with 24 points for the Golden Eagles and ends her career with 2,125 career points and a 110-4 record.

Assumption won their first state title in 2013 and finished as the runner-up to Barneveld the past two years before raising the Gold Ball this season.
