Mineral Point looked in control in the first half, leading by as many as ten before settling for a 28-22 halftime advantage over Kenosha St. Joseph in the WIAA Division 4 girls basketball state title game Saturday. The Pointers would go on for a 68-52 victory to claim the championship, but in between, things did not look good for head coach Mitch Wainwright and company.

The beginning of the second half was a disaster for Mineral Point, as St. Joseph junior Sidney Cooks started to take over. St. Joe's went up 42-35 with 10:34 remaining, and still had a 46-42 advantage at the 8:43 mark. Mineral Point looked tired, with no energy.

However, the Pointers dug deep and found a way to string together positive plays. They regained the lead at the 6:26 mark, and dominated the rest of the way, closing the game on a 26-6 run.

Jessica Schultz really got going late in the contest, finishing with 21 points and 9 rebounds. Sydney Staver added 20, while Clara Chambers chipped in 18.

Cooks, one of the top junior players in the entire country with offers from a Who's Who of colleges, had 30 points and 18 rebounds for the Lancers.

It is the first girls basketball state championship for Mineral Point, who was making its first appearance in the state tournament.
