Hayward captures the Division 3 state title

Hayward's free throw shooting down the stretch led them to their first state championship in program history, defeating Milwaukee School of Languages 43-31 in the Division 3 state title game. 

Hayward ended the game on a 26-7 run in the final after trailing Milwaukee School of Languages 24-17 with 10:52 remaining. 

The Hurricanes went 18-for-25 from the free throw line, most of which were from sophomore Madelyn Neff who made 15 of her 16 attempts. 

Neff set the Division 3 WIAA State Tournament record for most free throws made with 26, breaking Jenny Lindner of Neillsville's previous record of 24. Madelyn also broke the state tournament record for attempts with 28, Lindner also had that record with 27. 

Neither team struggled from on their field goal attempts, Hayward shot 35 percent while Milwaukee School of Languages shot just 24 percent from the floor. 

Neff tallied a double-double for the Hurricanes with 24 points and 10 rebounds.

Minnesota-Duluth recruit Katie Stark finished with 13 points and 13 rebounds for the Hurricanes. 

Milwaukee School of Languages was led by Zheniah Jackson who totaled 14 points.
