Verona claims its state title, edging Mukwonago in Division 1 championship game

Verona captured their first state title in program history, defeating Mukwonago 52-46 to finish Championship Saturday at the Resch Center. 

The Wildcats got a strong performance from junior Alex Luehring, finishing with 18 points, 7 rebounds, 3 assists, 3 blocks and 2 steals. 

The UW-Green Bay recruit went 4-for-9 from behind the arc with her fourth three of the game giving the Wildcats a 42-40 lead with 5:08 remaining. 

The Wildcats sealed the game with their free throw shooting, something they struggled with in their victory over Appleton North in state semi-finals. 

Wisconsin recruit Grace Mueller hit four-straight free throws and junior Alley Johnson sealed the win by hitting a pair of free throws with 11 seconds left. 

Mueller finished with 12 points and 7 rebounds for the Wildcats.

Fellow senior Cheyenne Trilling tallied 9 points, wearing No. 10 in honor of Ebony Nettles-Bey who lost her two-year battle with cancer last November. 

Mukwonago got stellar play from senior Bre Cera. The Iowa recruit finished with 25 points, 9 rebounds and 3 steals.

Ball State recruit Morgan Glatczak contributed 8 points, 8 rebounds and 3 blocks for the Indians.

In the first half with Mukwoango leading 8-7 they ran off over 3 minutes of clock with freshman Grace Beyer dribbling just across half court. After the 3 plus minutes of Verona staying in their zone defense, the Indians finally went into their offense and didn't got back to the stall. 

Verona wins their first state title in program history in its fourth appearance.

Mukwonago finished as the runner-up for the second time in the past four years, with the Indians reaching the state tournament in three of Cera's four seasons.
