From the WIAC:

University of Wisconsin-La Crosse’s Taylor Kohlwey was selected the Position Player of the Year, while teammate Caleb Boushley was named the Pitcher of the Year to headline the individuals chosen to the 2016 All-Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Baseball Team by the league coaches. Eagles head coach Chris Schwarz was tabbed the Coach of the Year.

Kohlwey also won the Position Player of the Year honor in 2014 and becomes the third individual in league history to win the award twice, joining UW-Oshkosh’s Jeremy Jirschele (2004, 2005) and UW-Whitewater’s Marty Herum (2012, 2013). A first team pick a season ago, Kohlwey leads the WIAC with a .494 batting average, .556 on-base percentage, .831 slugging percentage, 138 total bases, 82 hits, 65 runs scored, 19 doubles and eight triples. His 65 runs scored are a program single-season record.

He is currently on a 45-game hitting streak - the third-longest streak in NCAA Division III history and a school and WIAC record. Kohlwey has collected multiple hits in 26 contests, including three hits on four occasions. He became the seventh player in conference archives to hit for the cycle against UW-Whitewater on May 15. In the school career record book, Kohlwey ranks first with a .448 batting average, 263 hits, 55 doubles and 180 runs scored.

Boushley is the third Eagle to claim the pitching award, joining Joe Ohm (1997) and Andy Elskamp (2000). He leads the conference with a 1.83 earned run average, eight wins, 73.2 innings pitched and four complete games, while ranking second with 68 strikeouts and a .225 opponent batting average. Boushley has recorded at least seven strikeouts in seven of his 10 starting assignments, including a season-high 10 strikeouts against UW-Oshkosh on April 16. He allowed two earned runs or fewer in his first eight appearances.

Repeat selections on the first team from a season ago include: UW-La Crosse’s Justin Anderson and Alex Cordova; UW-Oshkosh’s John Eagan; and UW-Whitewater’s Curtis Morgan. UW-Stout’s Brady Burzynski secured first team recognition in 2014, along with Morgan.

Schwarz received the coaching honor for the third time in his career (2006, 2012) after leading the Eagles to the 14th WIAC regular-season championship and third tournament title in program archives. UW-La Crosse owns a 34-8 record and has secured a spot in the regionals of the NCAA Division III Championship.

An All-Sportsmanship Team was chosen for individuals that displayed exemplary sportsmanship throughout the season. It included one member from each school.

UW-Stout’s Burzynski Named Baseball Scholar-Athlete

University of Wisconsin-Stout’s Brady Burzynski has been selected the recipient of the 2016 Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Max Sparger Baseball Scholar-Athlete Award. The award is sponsored by Badgerland Financial.

A senior from Eau Claire, Wis. (Memorial), Burzynski maintains a 3.55 grade point average and is majoring in packaging with a minor in business/sales. He is a three-time member of the WIAC Scholastic Honor Roll and a five-time recipient of UW-Stout’s Chancellor’s Award for Academic Excellence.

A team captain this year, Burzynski was an All-WIAC first team selection in 2014 and 2016. He led the conference with 24 stolen bases during the 2015 campaign and owns the school career record with 48 stolen bases.

Burzynski is a member of the Institute of Packaging Professionals and has volunteered for youth baseball camps. He has served an internship with Menasha Corporation, assisting with structural design and has served as a play-by-play announcer on video streams for UW-Stout’s men’s ice hockey games the last two years.

The WIAC Scholar-Athlete Award is named after Max Sparger, who served as commissioner of the Wisconsin State University Conference for 22 years from 1971-93. He oversaw the transition of the conference from NAIA to full NCAA membership. Sparger arrived at UW-Stout in 1959 and served the institution in a variety of capacities, including an assistant football and basketball coach, head wrestling coach and head football coach. He served as UW-Stout's athletics director from 1969-71.

UW-La Crosse’s Troy Kenkel (Sr., Menomonee Falls, Wis.) was also nominated for this year’s scholar-athlete award.

In order to be nominated for the scholar-athlete award, a student-athlete must have a minimum 3.50 grade point average. In addition, he must be in his last year of competition, or on schedule to graduate this academic year, and have competed for a minimum of two years.
