There were the usual weather delays and resulting scheduling challenges, but the 2016 WIAA State Softball Championships wrapped up yesterday.

In Division 1, Stevens Point topped Kenosha Tremper and Pulaski by convincing margins to advance to the title game, where they faced Watertown, who had dispatched Verona and Union Grove. Stevens Point blew the game open in the middle innings to secure a 16-4 victory. It is the ninth state title for the Panthers, the most in WIAA history.

All three games in Division 2 were decided by a single run, as Delavan-Darien topped Northwestern/South Shore 1-0 in 9 innings in one semi-final, while New Berlin West bested New London 4-3 in the other contest. The Vikings of West scored a pair of runs in the third inning, and Cheyenne Sowinski made the lead hold up in a 2-1 win, the first state title in program history.

Both Division 3 semi-final games were blowouts, with Grantsburg run-ruling Poynette 10-0 in five innings and Laconia dominating Mishicot 9-0 as Kayla Schwebke tossed a perfect game. Grantsburg went up 2-0 early in the title game, but Laconia scored three unearned runs to take over in a 3-2 win. It is the second consecutive championship for the Spartans, who finished undefeated.

Southwestern and Thorp were dominating winners in the Division 4 state semi-finals, topping Cochrane-Fountain City and Oakfield respectively. Thorp went ahead early and cruised home to a 9-2 victory, claiming the first state title in school history.
