WIAA Summer Baseball State Tournament Preview

THE TOURNAMENT:  The 52nd Annual Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association Summer Baseball State Tournament will take place Friday, July 22, at Kapco Park on the campus of Concordia University in Mequon, Wis. Action will begin at 9:05 a.m. with the first of two semifinals. The start has been moved earlier than the scheduled 11:35 a.m. because of heat concerns. The championship game will begin at 6:05 p.m. Ticket prices for the tourney are $8 per session and are available only at the park.

TOURNAMENT SCHEDULE AND PAIRINGS:  The format features a single elimination tournament with four teams in a single division. The second semifinal game will follow the first game.

Friday, July 22
Semifinals - 9:05 a.m.
Game #1 - Marquette (26-6) vs. Oak Creek (31-2)
Game #2 - New Holstein (20-10) vs. Menomonee Falls (23-10)*

Championship Final - 6:05 p.m.
Game #3 - Winner of Game #1 vs. Winner of Game #2

TOURNEY ON TIME WARNER SPORTS CHANNEL: The semifinals and final of the WIAA State Summer Baseball Tournament will be aired live on Time Warner Cable Sports Channel 32 in Milwaukee and Green Bay.

TOURNAMENT LIVE STREAM:  The semifinals and finals of the WIAA State Summer Baseball Tournament will be streamed live on the WIAA.TV portal of the NFHS Network on a consumer subscription basis. TEAM TOURNAMENT HISTORY:  The WIAA has been sponsoring the State Summer Baseball Championships since 1965. Brookfield Central and Oak Creek leads in the number of titles won with four. Brown Deer, Greendale, Homestead, West Bend East and West Bend West have won three State titles followed by Arrowhead, Franklin, Marquette and Nicolet with two. New Holstein has made the most State appearances, now with 19. Ashland and West Bend West are second on the list of tournament appearances with 13; Platteville and Plymouth have played in 12 State Tournaments. Arcadia, Franklin, Gale-Ettrick-Trempealeau, West Bend East have each made appearances in 10 State Tournaments. The State Summer Baseball Tournament has been won by 30 different schools.

LAST YEAR:  Menomonee Falls won the title in convincing fashion with a five-inning, 11-0 shutout over Franklin in the championship game. The Indians  scored three runs in the first two innings to take command of the game. They added five runs in the top of the fifth. Zach Kornburger led the Indians offense, going 3-for-3 with three runs scored and an RBI. Myles Mayer also contributed with a double and two RBIs, and Lukas Kell helped his cause on the mound with two hits. He scattered five hits and struck out three to post the victory. Mike Davis was the leading hitter for Franklin with a pair of hits. 

TOURNAMENT FIELD:  Defending champion Menomonee Falls is making its seventh appearance. The Indians have recorded three runner-up finishes to go with their one title. Those runner-up finishes came in 1968, 2001 and 2004. They finished third in the Greater Metro Conference standings this season behind Oak Creek and Marquette, who have also advanced to State. The Indians defeated West Bend West 10-6 to capture the title of the Germantown Sectional and advance to the State semifinals. New Holstein is making its membership-leading 19th appearance in the State Summer Baseball Tournament and its first since 2010. The Huskies won the State title in 1965 and have finished runner-up in 1974, 1986 and 2007. They are the champions of the Plymouth Sectional with a 10-4 win over Kiel in the final. The Huskies placed third in the Big East Conference standings this season. Marquette returns to the State Tournament for the ninth time and for the first time since 2011. The Hilltoppers won State titles in 2006 and 2008. In addition, they finished runner-up in 1999 and 2009. They finished second in the Greater Metro Conference standings this season behind Oak Creek. Their return to the State Tournament comes following a five-inning, 10-0 shutout over Pewaukee in the Brookfield Central Sectional final. Oak Creek will be making its eighth appearance at the State Tournament and its second in the last three years. The Knights’ four titles are the most of any program, and they are the only program to win three straight championships (2003-2005). They added another title in 2012. The Knights are the 2016 champions in the Greater Metro Conference this year, and they advanced through the South Milwaukee Sectional with a 12-4 win over Muskego in the final.
