WisSports.net Week 1 Player of the Week Nominees:
Zach Genrich, Mukwonago - The Indians missed the playoffs last year in a loaded Classic Eight Conference, but proved right away in Week 1 that they will be a threat this season. Hosting Franklin, who was undefeated until Level 4 last year, Mukwonago scored an impressive 22-13 win. Genrich rushed 13 times for 193 yards and one touchdown. His score came on a twisting 80-yard romp with 4:28 left in the game after Franklin had pulled within 15-13 just seconds before.
Caiden Haake, Pepin/Alma - If you want to talk about an all-around game, Haake might have put together as complete of an evening as you could possibly imagine in a 49-18 win over Cochrane-Fountain City. The versatile senior rushed 17 times for 118 yards and 3 touchdowns, caught 3 passes for 28 yards, had 13 tackles, 5 sacks, and 1 forced fumble on defense, posted 96 yards of kickoff/punt returns, punted once for 25 yards, and kicked five extra points.
Zach Heckman, Brookfield Central - Brookfield Central and Whitefish Bay played a wild game Friday night, needing overtime to settle the score before Central won 50-43. Much of the Lancers damage came on the ground, as they rolled up 397 yards rushing. Heckman carried the load in a big way, with 43 rushing attempts for 190 yards and 3 touchdowns as he ground out tough yards for head coach Jed Kennedy.
Brandon Herrick, Stanley-Boyd - Stanley-Boyd and Stratford were both Level 3 teams last year and ranked in the preseason top five in Division 5 by WisSports.net. Friday's opening non-conference game appeared to be an excellent early season small school game, but Stanley-Boyd pulled away for a 35-7 victory. Herrick made big-play after big-play in the passing game, catching touchdowns of 49-, 58-, 36-, and 60-yards. In total, he hauled in 7 passes for 248 yards and 4 scores, adding three extra points as well.
Nate Ihlenfeldt, Notre Dame - De Pere won an outright FRCC title last year, but it was Notre Dame that made the most noise in the postseason by winning a Division 3 state title. Picked as two of the top teams in the league once again, Notre Dame took an early leg up, pulling away for a 42-14 victory. Ihlenfeldt rushed 26 times for 192 yards and 3 touchdowns, adding a 55-yard punt return score in the second quarter.
