Looking Back

Despite some challenges with three canceled games, it was a solid opening weekend in the 8-Man Football game. Two programs made their debuts in reduced-player football: Wisconsin Heights and Mercer/Butternut.

Wisconsin Heights was one of the big stories in Week 1, as the Vanguards transitioned from the Capitol-South Conference with a 34-20 win over a Green Bay NEW Lutheran program that has appeared in the last three unofficial 8-Man state title games. First year coach Jeff Supernaw got three rushing touchdowns from quarterback Tyler Flamme, who also threw for 170 yards on just four completions, with several big plays to Tylan Parman.

Mercer/Butternut fell 52-22 to Bruce, but it was good to see the co-op program sponsoring football, as neither school has had a football team in quite some time.

One of the marquee games on the regular season schedule was a showdown between two-time defending unofficial state champion Prairie Farm and Luck, who has also been one of the best 8-Man teams in the state the last few years. Technically a non-conference game replacing canceled contests for each team, Prairie Farm pulled out a 26-6 victory, once again establishing themselves as the team to beat in 8-Man Football.

Looking Ahead

Abundant Life saw its Week 1 game canceled by Bowler/Gresham, as the Chargers now open their 2016 season with a Great 8-South game against Oakfield. The Oaks are coming off a very impressive 82-40 win over Oneida Nation, as by halftime the team had scored touchdowns via rush, pass, fumble return, punt return, and kickoff returns. Abundant Life, ranked 2nd in the initial WisSports.net Coaches Poll, features the 8-Man game's most explosive player in Obi Iwuagu, and there could be plenty of points put up against the 6th-ranked Oaks.

Siren, ranked 7th to start the year, travels to Bruce in another undefeated match-up. It is the conference opener for Bruce. Green Bay NEW Lutheran will look to bounce back from Week 1's loss against Wisconsin Heights by hosting Lena/St. Thomas Aquinas.

Star of the Week: Wesley Schiek, Valley Christian

In a 61-14 win over Gibratlar, Valley Christian receiver Wesley Schiek caught 7 passes for 301 yards and 5 touchdowns as the team put up 396 yards through the air and 121 on the ground. Schiek's 301 receiving yards is a new 8-Man record, while his 5 receiving scores ties the state mark. He added 7 tackles on defense as well.
