Former Franklin quarterback Sean McGuire had a big day in helping Western Illinois to a win

Many high school football standouts in Wisconsin go on to big things at the college level and in the pros, and this is our spot to recognize those athletes each week and help you keep up with what is going down on some of your favorite players from the past. If you have alumni news, please send it to Colton Wilson by 4 p.m. on Tuesdays.

Alumni Update

A few weeks back we shed spotlight on the former high school players from Wisconsin that have made opening day rosters for teams in the NFL. Opening weekend proved to be a spectacular Sunday for two former Kenosha Bradford teammates, Melvin Gordon and Trae Waynes. Gordon, of the San Diego Chargers, rushed for 51 yards on 14 carries and his first 2 career touchdowns in a 33-27 overtime loss to the Kansas City Chiefs. Waynes tallied a team high 10 tackles for the Minnesota Vikings in their opening weekend 35-16 win over the Tennessee Titans.

In Northern Sun action this week, a few St. Cloud State athletes made big plays in the Huskies' 27-20 win over Upper Iowa University. Freshman Colin Radowicz (Mukwonago) scored his first career, and tie-breaking, touchdown late in the third quarter. Carvel Graham (Kenosha Bradford) recorded 2 interceptions, including one in the fourth quarter, to set up the Huskies' final scoring possession.

In other Norther Sun play, Concordia's J.J. Przybylka (Waterford), had a career day in a 41-18 win over Minnesota Crookston. The junior linebacker recorded a career high 17 tackles, which is fourth most in team history.

A pair of in-state athletes from the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater was named the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) offensive and defensive players of the week. Running back Drew Patterson (Sussex Hamilton) had 22 carries for 227 yards and 3 touchdowns. Defensive back Colin Buck (Franklin) had 4 tackles, 2 interceptions, and a forced fumble in Whitewater's 59-13 win over Belhaven University out of Mississippi.

The University of Wisconsin's 54-10 victory over Akron was powered by many in-state recruits. Jazz Peavy (Kenosha Tremper) led all receivers with 7 catches for 100 yards and 2 scores, while fullbacks Austin Ramesh (Northland Pines) and Alec Ingold (Bay Port) each recorded a touchdown. Leo Musso (Waunakee) notched his fourth career interception, while T.J. Watt (Pewaukee) and Alec James (Brookfield East) each recorded a sack.

In other Big Ten play, the Minnesota Gophers' placekicker Emmit Carpenter (Ashwaubenon) connected on three field goals beyond 40 yards and also went 7 for 7 in extra points in the Gophers' 58-28 victory over Indiana State. Brian Smith (Brookfield East) had 4 catches for 61 yards and a score for the Gophers. Nathan Stanley from Menomonie High School got his first appearance for the Iowa Hawkeyes in their impressive 42-3 win over rival Iowa State. He completed one pass for two yards.

Jesse Kroll (Algoma) made one of the best plays of the early college football season in Central Michigan's 30-27 upset victory over #22 Oklahoma State. With an untimed play, Kroll caught a 50 yard Hail Mary at the 10 yard line and while being tackled, completed a lateral to a teammate who scampered in for the game-winning score.

In FCS play, a pair of in-state recruits helped Western Illinois to a 34-20 win over Northern Arizona. Quarterback Sean McGuire (Franklin) went 22-31 for 336 yards and 2 scores, while Isaiah Lesure (Mount Horeb) caught 3 of those passes for 51 yards and a touchdown.
