WisSports.net Week 9 Player of the Week Nominees:
Brandon Berg, Pewaukee -- The Woodland-West champion Pirates faced off with Woodland-East champ Greenfield for the Woodland Conference title game on Thursday in a game that counted in the league standings for both teams. Pewaukee never trailed in the game, but it was close throughout, as the Pirates scored a 37-29 victory. Berg had a pair of fourth quarter touchdowns to help seal the deal, finishing with 125 yards and 3 touchdowns on 10 carries. He also had 7 tackles on defense.
Hunter Merrill, Ripon -- Ripon needed a win to secure its first playoff spot since 2010, and Merrill led the way as the Tigers got the job done in a 21-20 win over Winneconne. He finished with 14 carries for 193 yards and 3 touchdowns, adding 3 tackles and a sack on defense. He also had 40 yards in the return game and punted once for 32 yards.
Collin Sathe, Germantown -- The Warhawks faced a winner-gets-in, loser-stays-home game against Milwaukee Lutheran, and it was Germantown that came out victorious, 45-28. Sathe led the team in not only passing but rushing, completing 9 of 16 passes for 170 yards and 2 touchdowns, adding 134 yards and a score on 12 rush attempts as well.
Matt Schmitt, Brodhead/Juda -- As it played out, Brodhead/Juda likely would have won a tiebreaker to get in the playoffs even with a loss, but the Cardinals left no doubt by defeating East Troy 30-21. Schmitt threw for 153 yards and 3 touchdowns in the victory, adding 13 rushing yards, one tackle, and 6 punts for 192 yards as well, helping Brodhead/Juda secure a 25th straight postseason appearance.
Jakup Sinani, Oak Creek -- The Knights needed a win to get in the WIAA postseason, facing a tough Kenosha Indian Trail club on the road. Falling behind 28-14 entering the fourth quarter, Sinani would not be rattled. He connected with Ryan Harvey-Turner for a score early in the quarter, then engineered what proved to be the game-winning drive with less than two minutes remaining. After Matiss Sika scored from 7 yards out with 42 seconds remaining, Sinani hooked up with Harvey-Turner again for the two-point conversion and the victory. He finished with 251 yards and 2 touchdowns on 20 of 34 passing, adding 33 rushing yards as well.
