Many high school football standouts in Wisconsin go on to big things at the college level and in the pros, and this is our spot to recognize those athletes each week and help you keep up with what is going down on some of your favorite players from the past. If you have alumni news, please send it to Colton Wilson by 4 p.m. on Tuesdays.

Alumni Update

Last season as a rookie former Kenosha Bradford running back Melvin Gordon didn’t find the end zone once for the San Diego Chargers. Last Sunday he had 3 touchdowns in the Chargers 33-30 win over the Atlanta Falcons. Outside of quarterbacks, Gordon leads the NFL with 10 total touchdowns this year.

Minnesota's kicker Emmit Carpenter has a great 2016 season going thus far, and last weekend he added to it. With 6 seconds remaining, the Ashwaubenon graduate booted a 28 yard field goal to give the Gophers a 34-32 win over Rutgers.

It seems every week there’s a top 10 match up in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC). This past weekend was no different as #6 UW-Oshkosh beat #10 UW-Platteville 22-13. Dylan Hecker (Winneconne) and Devon Linzenmeyer (Ozaukee) combined for over 200 rushing yards and 2 touchdowns to help Oshkosh to victory.

UW-Whitewater, which is ranked #2 in division 3, got a huge performance from Drew Patterson (Sussex Hamilton) in their 24-2 win over UW-Stevens Point. Patterson had 190 total yards and 2 touchdowns, earning him WIAC’s Offensive Player of the Week. The Whitewater defense was led by Bailey Breunig (Sauk Prairie) and Vince Mason (Green Bay Southwest) who both had an interception, while Harry Henschler (Janesville Craig) and Bryce Leszczynski (Pius XI) each recorded a sack.

In Mid-American Conference (MAC) play, Bowling Green was led on defense by David Konowalski (Waukesha West). Konowalski had a season high 9 tackles in the Falcon’s 40-26 loss to Miami (Ohio). Elsewhere around the MAC, Jackson Abresch (Arrowhead) and Marcus Kelly (Waukesha West) each had their first tackles for Northern Illinois in the Huskies’ 44-7 win over Buffalo.

Minnesota Duluth and Bemidji State both include a pletehora of Wisconsin kids. Those two schools squared off this weekend with Duluth winning 54-47. Barron alum Jason Balts had 7 catches for 165 yards and 3 touchdowns for Duluth. Hudson’s Alex Burgess had 4 tackles including one for loss for Bemidji. Also, Vince Dinkel (Marathon) had 48 receiving yards for the Beavers.

Will Cross (Turtle Lake) had 11 tackles and an interception, while Aeric Berner (Antigo) had a 75 yard interception returned for a touchdown in Minnesota Crookston’s 30-28 win over Minot State.  Freshmen Joe Blando (Oak Creek) and Nick Greenlund (Eau Claire North) combined for 3 touchdowns in St. Cloud State’s 29-28 loss to Northern State. St. Thomas More’s Jake Schley accounted for 5 tackles and half a sack as well for St. Cloud State.

In extended Northern Sun coverage, J.J. Pryzbylka (Waterford) had an interception for Concorida in their 51-17 loss to Sioux Falls. Joe Rademacher (St. Croix Falls) had a season high 13 tackles in Minnesota State Moorehead’s 35-20 win over Southwest Minnesota State. Ty Dennis (Burlington) and Brent Esser (D.C. Everest) each had a receiving touchdown for Minnesota State Mankato in their 35-20 win over Southwest Minnesota State. Zach Dodge (Wilmot) led Mankato’s defense with 3 sacks.

Coming off their first loss of the season, North Dakota State’s defense did something that nobody had been able to do all year. They held Western Illinois quarterback Sean McGuire to 0 touchdowns in their 21-13 win. The Franklin alum had 10 passing touchdowns coming into the game. North Dakota State’s defense was led up front by Brad Ambrosius (West De Pere), Grant Morgan (Oskhosh North), and Nate Tanguay (Mukwonago) who had 9 tackles.

St. Norbert was helped mightily by Wisconsin athletes in their 48-7 win over Ripon. Plymouth’s Samuel Stahling had 100 yards receiving and 2 touchdowns. Brad Boockmeier (Green Bay Preble) and Drew Rhodes (Waukesha West) each had a receiving touchdown as well. Stuart Kwaterski (Notre Dame) had 3 tackles for loss and a fumble recovery for St. Norbert.
