Many high school football standouts in Wisconsin go on to big things at the college level and in the pros, and this is our spot to recognize those athletes each week and help you keep up with what is going down on some of your favorite players from the past. If you have alumni news, please send it to Colton Wilson by 4 p.m. on Tuesdays.

Alumni Update

With Division 2 and Division 3 football beginning playoffs and FBS and FCS schools finishing up their last 2 weeks of games, many in-state recruits were subjected to seasons coming to an end. However, those who still had games this week made the most of it.

In the University of Wisconsin’s 49-20 rout of Purdue University, 4 touchdowns were achieved by in-state athletes. Fullback Alec Ingold (Bay Port) had a rushing and receiving touchdown while wide receiver Jazz Peavy (Kenosha Tremper) found the end zone for the 6th time this year. Linebacker T.J. Watt (Pewaukee) recorded yet another sack, totaling 8, and took an interception for a touchdown. Leo Musso (Waunakee) also had his third interception in 2 games, totaling 4 on the year.

Last week, the WIAC posted their all-conference list and players of the year. Many athletes from around the state compiled that list. With the regular season over, three WIAC teams advanced to the division 3 playoffs. UW-Whitewater and UW-Oshkosh advanced to round 2 while UW-Platteville suffered a heartbreaking loss.

Freshman running back Mitch Gerhartz (Hortonville) rushed for over 200 yards and 1 touchdown in UW-Oshkosh’s 49-13 win over Washington University. Devon Linzenmeyer (Ozaukee) added 2 touchdowns on the ground while quarterback Brett Kasper (Two Rivers) threw for three scores. Dom Todarello (Arrowhead), Riley Kallas (Winneconne), and Johnny Eagan (Wautoma) each hauled in a receiving touchdown. Cameron Brown (Milwaukee Riverside) and Cole Yoder (Oshkosh West) both recorded an interception for UW-Oshkosh’s stifling defense.

UW-Whitewater was also led on the ground by a freshman running back. Josh Ringelberg, a Greendale graduate rushed for 142 yards and 3 touchdowns in the Warhawks’ 45-27 win over Lakeland College. Quarterback Chris Nelson (Wilmot) threw a touchdown each to Mitchell Dess (South Milwaukee), Marcus Hudson (Delavan-Darien), and Tony Gumina (Sussex Hamilton).

Grant Menard hauled in 3 touchdown passes for Drake University in their 45-17 win over Stetson. The Whitefish Bay wide receiver has a whopping 5 touchdowns in the last 2 games. His high school teammate Tyler Terveer forced a fumble for the Drake defense.

Two quarterbacks who have appeared multiple times in this article in weeks past, again played well for their respective teams. James Morgan (Ashwaubenon) threw for another 2 touchdowns in Bowling Green’s 42-7 win over Kent State. Sean McGuire (Franklin) had 4 combined scores for Western Illinois in their 44-34 loss to Southern Illinois.

The Northern Sun put out their all-conference teams which was littered with Wisconsin athletes, many of whom have been mentioned in weeks past. There were a total of 22 players on the list; 7 first team, 6 second team, and 9 honorable mention.

Northern Sun team Minnesota Duluth fell in the first round of playoffs to Emporia State 59-26. Jason Balts (Barron) had 137 yards receiving and a touchdown, as well as a 90 yard kickoff return for a touchdown for Duluth. Mitchell Johnson-Martin (La Crosse Central), Jared Karow (Franklin), Zach Bassuener (Wisconsin Rapids), Gus Wedig (Big Foot), Regis Henke (Wisconsin Rapids), and Tom Johnson (Xavier) all had at least 1 tackled for Duluth’s defense.

Two linebackers had big days for their Division 1 programs. Alex Schwab (West Allis Hale) had a career high 14 tackles in Northern Illinois’ 31-24 win over Eastern Michigan. James Nachtigal (Fort Atkinson) recorded 2 sacks and 3 tackles for loss in Army’s 60-3 win over Morgan State.

St. Norbert freshman wide receiver Samuel Staehling was named the Midwest Conference’s Newcomer of the Year. The Plymouth alum was also named second team all-conference. Twelve in-state athletes (7 first team, 5 second team) were named to the Midwest Conference’s all-conference teams.
