In addition, UW-Oshkosh head coach Brad Fischer collected Coach of the Year honors.

UW-La Crosse’s Miller Claims Women’s Basketball Scholar-Athlete Award

University of Wisconsin-La Crosse’s MaKenzie Miller has been selected the recipient of the 2017 Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Judy Kruckman Women's Basketball Scholar-Athlete Award. The award is sponsored by Badgerland Financial.

A senior from Chatfield, Minn., Miller is majoring in physical education with a minor in adapted physical education and coaching concentration. She owns a 3.60 grade point average and is a three-time member of the WIAC Scholastic Honor Roll. Miller has been recognized on UW-La Crosse’s Dean’s List numerous semesters and was nominated by the faculty for the Student-Athlete of the Year Award in 2015-16.

Miller claimed All-WIAC first team recognition this year after receiving honorable mention laurels the previous two seasons. She grabbed a school-record 26 rebounds against UW-Stevens Point on Feb. 18. The mark also ranks second in the WIAC single-game record book. Miller is a two-year team captain and has led the squad in scoring, rebounding, blocked shots and double-doubles the last two seasons.

She is a member of UW-La Crosse’s Student-Athlete Advisory Committee and has volunteered with the school’s Motor Development Program and Adult Fitness Program. Miller has been involved with the Adapted Sports League in La Crosse area high schools.

Also nominated for this year's scholar-athlete award were:  UW-Oshkosh’s Alex Richard (Sr., Kewaunee, Wis.); UW-River Falls’ Hannah Pignato (Sr., Cottage Grove, Minn./East Ridge); and UW-Stevens Point’s Taylor Douglas (Sr., Brodhead, Wis.).

The WIAC Scholar-Athlete Award is named after Judy Kruckman who served as Assistant Commissioner for the WIAC from 1996-98. Prior to this appointment, she was Commissioner of the Wisconsin Women's Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WWIAC) from October, 1984 - September, 1996. Kruckman was the women's athletics director at UW-Eau Claire from 1974-84, and one of the original representatives to the WWIAC when it formed in 1971.

In order to be nominated for the scholar-athlete award, a student-athlete must have a minimum 3.50 grade point average. In addition, she must be in her last year of competition, or on schedule to graduate this academic year, and have competed for a minimum of two years.
