Whitewater's Myriama Smith-Traore selected as the top senior Defensive player

Whitewater's Myriama Smith-Traore has been selected as the top senior Defensive player as part of the WSN Basketball Awards

Smith-Traore is athletic forward that is dominant in the paint; she blocks and alters shots, get steals, and is also a tenacious rebounder. Myriama is also a strong offensive player that can score in a variety of ways around the basket and step out and knock down a jumper. 

The Marquette recruit averaged 16.9 points, 15.1 rebounds, 2.9 assists, 2.9 steals, and 5 blocks per game for coach Judy Harms and the Whippets. 

She is a model of consistency, finishing with a double-double in 24 of Whitewater's 25 games.

Myriama also recored two triple-doubles; finishing with 14 points, 20 rebounds, and 15 blocks in a win over Broadhead, and tallying 20 points, 17 rebounds, and 10 blocks in a victory against Palmyra-Eagle. 

Smith-Traore, a 6-foot-2 forward, finished her career with 1,393 points, 1,186 rebounds, and 377 blocks. 

Last season, she was named unanimous WBCA All-State and received Rock Valley-North Player of the Year. 

Smith-Traore helped Whitewater to a 94-8 record in her four years, including going 28-0 when the Whippets won the Division 3 state title her sophomore year. 

Finalists for the award were Smith-Traore, Brooke Geier of Kewaunee, Amazshea Lee of Milwaukee Bay View/Lifelong Learning, Callie Pohlman of Appleton North, and Sydney Staver of Mineral Point. 

Past winners of the award include Morgan Glatczak of Mukwonago (2016), Taylor Higginbotham of Germantown (2015), Jen Wellnitz of Black Hawk (2014), Emily Gustafson of South Shore (2013), and Alexis Lindstrom of Howards Grove (2012).
