Appleton North completes undefeated season by defeating De Pere in D1 state title game

Appleton North cruised to a 49-34 victory against De Pere claim the Division 1 state title, finishing the year with a 28-0 record. 

The Lightning scored the first eight points of the game and never trailed in the championship game to win the first state title in program history. 

De Pere was able to tie the game a couple times in the second half, last coming at 27 with 12:24 to play, but Appleton North outscored the Redbirds 22-7 the rest of the way to earn the win. 

Sophomore Paige Schabo finished with a game-high 16 points and added 7 rebounds for Appleton North. 

Junior Kari Brekke totaled 13 points, 5 rebounds, and 4 assists for the Lightning. Senior and McKendree recruit Callie Pohlman tallied 9 points and 3 assists, while junior and UW-Milwaukee recruit Sydney Levy finished with 6 points, 6 rebounds, and 2 assists. 

De Pere got a team-high 11 points from sophomore Rachel Kerkhoff. Senior Lizzie Miller tallied 7 points and junior Annie Schneider added 6 points for the Redbirds. 

Senior Olivia DeCleene, the FRCC Defensive Player of the Year, injured her knee with 9:48 left in the fist half and did not return. 

Appleton North is the first school from Appleton to take home a state championship in girls' basketball.
