WBCA announces Division 3 Boys Basketball All-State Team

Ripon senior Bennett Vander Plas is the lone unanimous athlete selected to the Wisconsin Basketball Coaches Association Division 3 All-State team and headlines a group of extremely gifted players chosen to the 10-man squad.

The 6-foot-8 Vander Plas, who led Ripon to a 26-1 record and a spot in the WIAA Division 3 State Tournament, averaged 19.5 points, 12.2 rebounds and 4.1 assists per game. The son of Ripon coach Dean Vander Plas, Bennett Vander Plas was chosen as the Player of the Year in the East Central Conference and is headed to NCAA Division I Ohio University on a basketball scholarship in the fall.

Madison Edgewood senior Alex Arians (6-4) had a huge season for the Crusaders, leading his team to a share of the Badger South Conference title and earning Player of the Year honors in the highly competitive league. Arians helped Edgewood to a 19-6 record by averaging 18.9 ppg. The South Dakota State recruit scored more than 1,000 points in his prep career.

Evansville senior Brennen Banks (6-0) was a four-year starter for the Blue Devils and helped his team to a share of the Rock Valley North Conference title by averaging 23.6 ppg. Banks, who was named Player of the Year in the league, led Evansville to a 19-5 record. He scored more than 1,700 points in his prep career at will play college basketball at NCAA Division III powerhouse St. Norbert College.

Hayward senior Xavier Cummings (6-1) was voted Player of the Year in the Heart O’North Conference after helping his squad to a share of the league title. He averaged 28.1 points, 7.9 rebounds and 3.9 assists as a senior, leading Hayward to a 17-7 record. He scored more than 1,500 points in three seasons of varsity competition.

Waupun sophomore Marcus Domask (6-5) is one of the state’s top collegiate prospects in the class of 2019 and has scored 981 points in two years of varsity competition while playing for his father and coach, Dan Domask. Marcus Domask earned unanimous first-team all-league honors in the East Central Conference after averaging 20.4 points and 4.3 assists and helping Waupun to a 19-6 record.

Beloit Turner senior Alec Fruin (6-4) is one of the best unsigned class of 2017 college prospects in Wisconsin and is receiving strong interest from a number of NCAA Division II schools. In four years of varsity play, Fruin scored 1,985 points. As a senior, the versatile wing player averaged 27.7 points, 10.7 rebounds and 3.8 assists while helping Turner to a 22-4 record and the title in the Rock Valley South Conference.

Prescott senior Owen Hamilton (7-1) continued his rapid progression as a player during a remarkable season in which he averaged 25.1 points, 12.3 rebounds and 3.2 blocks while helping the Cardinals to a 24-4 record, the title in the Middle Border Conference and a runner-up finish in the WIAA Division 3 State Tournament. The NCAA Division I recruit for Northern Illinois was chosen as the Player of the Year in the Middle Border.

Ripon senior Eddie Muench (6-4) enjoyed a breakout senior season, averaging 23.1 ppg and scoring 36 in the Tigers’ sectional final victory over Martin Luther. A very good long-range shooter, Muench earned unanimous first-team all-league honors in the East Central Conference. A career 1,000-point scorer, Muench’s strong play in 2016-17 garnered a recent scholarship offer from NCAA Division II Winona State.

Xavier junior Hunter Plamann (6-1) was chosen Player of the Year in the Bay Conference after helping the Hawks to a 28-0 record and the Division 3 state title. An aggressive, skilled lead guard, Plamann averaged 21.6 points, 6.0 rebounds and 7.5 assists for the Hawks’ up-tempo offense. He has scored more than 1,300 career points heading into his senior season.

Lake Mills senior Alex Ranney (6-1) helped the L-Cats to their first trip ever to the WIAA State Tournament by sinking the game-winning three-point shot in the sectional final victory over Adams-Friendship. He averaged 19.8 points, 9.6 rebounds and 4.6 assists en route to earning Player of the Year honors in the Capitol North Conference.
